Doyle S. Elders, 59, of Newfoundland, Pa., died Sunday, May 13, 2001, in Mercy Hospital, Scranton.
A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Arthur J. Frey Funeral Home, Route 191, Village of LaAnna, South Sterling. A native of Sylva, he was the son of the late Fred and Flora Ridley Elders. He had lived in the Newfoundland area since 1961. He was a carpenter and owned and operated his own home construction and remodeling business. He also worked for Jack Kalins and the Megargle Golf Courses. He was a member of Rockport Hunting Club, the National Rifle Association, president of the Newfoundland Horseshoe League, and an organizer of the Fish for Kids program. He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Elders. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Morris Elders; two daughters, Tammy L. Morris of Goudsboro, Pa., and Tina D. Ahner of Mount Pocono, Pa.; one son, Randy E. Elders of Greentown, Pa.; two brothers, Dulane Elders of Sylva and Delmer Elders of Sterling, Pa.; one sister, Diane Stevenson of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to the family. |

Edward WalkerEdward C. Walker, 62, of Sylva, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, in the Melton-Riddle Funeral Home chapel. Military rites were conducted by Sylva American Legion Post 104. A private burial will be held at a later date. A native of Oceana, W.Va., he had lived in Jackson County for the past six months and was the son of Zelphia Williamson Walker of Clearwater, Fla., and the late Jesse C. Walker. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was preceded in death by one son, Roger Dale Walker, and one brother, Danny Walker. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Wanda Ruth Hughes Walker; one son, Edward Guy Walker of El Paso, Texas; one stepson, Jeffery Leon Scroggs of Gastonia; three stepdaughters, Amanda Lynn Golden and Melinda Gayle Tabor, both of Sylva, and Kimberly Jeannette Cook of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; his maternal grandmother, Mary Williamson of W.Va.; three sisters, Jessie Gorgton and Jerri Lynn Lorizel, both of Clearwater, Fla., and Norene Jefferies of Columbus, Ohio; six brothers, Bobby Joe Walker, Gary Walker, Donnie Walker and Kenny Walker, all of Clearwater, Fla., LeRoy Walker of West Virginia and Coy Walker of Columbus, Ohio; and seven grandchildren. Jean Coggins, 53, of Sylva, formerly of Fall Cliff community, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, after a 30-year battle with diabetes.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at Fall Cliff Baptist Church. The Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Hardin Nicholson officiated. Burial was in Fall Cliff Cemetery. Pallbearers were Shannon Coggins, Justin Coggins Jr., Steve Coggins, Bruce Bryson, Edwin McFalls and Cliff Coggins. She was a daughter of the late Dee and Jessie Lee Coggins. She was formerly employed as a laundry clerk at Western Carolina University and was a member of Fall Cliff Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one sister, Carolyn Coggins. Surviving are one sister, Kathy Cross of Sylva; and two brothers, Harold Coggins of Sylva and Lester Coggins of Sylva. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pamela CrowePamela Jane Wright Crowe, 40, of Cherokee, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in an Asheville hospital after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at the Big Witch Baptist Church. The Rev. Dale Banks officiated. Burial followed in the Pamela J. Crowe Cemetery on Tom George Road in Cherokee. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a member of Acquoni Chapel, she was employed by the Eastern Band of Cherokee as a program specialist. She was a daughter of Iva Lee Wright of Cherokee and the late Howard Wright Jr. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, John W. Crowe; two sons, Jerry Lee Lossiah Jr. and Joshua Wesley Crowe; two daughters, Pascha Lynn Lossiah and Kesley Diana Crowe; two brothers, Benjamin R. Wright and Howard J. George Robert Gunter, 95, of Bryson City's Shephard's Creek community, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in a Swain County nursing home.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Dan Lambert, Ray Lambert and Ray Fox officiated. Burial was in Holly Springs Cemetery No. 2. Bobby Gunter, Jeff Gunter, Ray Stevens, Jared Stevens, Jordan Stevens and Rocky Stillwell served as pallbearers. A native of Swain County, he was the son of Adolphus Erwin and "Penn" Gunter and Molly Watkins Gunter. He was a member and deacon of Holly Springs Baptist Church and pastored several churches in Swain and Jackson counties. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Bertha Medford Gunter, who died in 1998; and one granddaughter. Surviving are one son, Robert Ensley Gunter of Bryson City; one daughter, Teresa Stevens; two sons, Bobby Gunter and Jeff Gunter, all of Whittier; and five great-grandchildren. Naomi KanottNaomi Jackson Kanott, 72, of Cherokee's Wolftown community, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at Cherokee Indian Hospital after a period of declining health.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Acquoni Baptist Chapel, of which she was a member. The Rev. Robert Christopher and Ray Kinsland will officiate. Burial will be in Jackson Cemetery. Her grandsons and nephews will be pallbearers. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Jack C. and Mary Queen Jackson. She retired from Cherokee Indian Hospital. She was preceded in death by her son, Eddie Kanott; four brothers, former Principal Chief Walter Jackson, Boyd Jackson, Johnny Jackson and Jack Jackson; three sisters, Mackie Abram and twins Marlyn Jackson and Jacquelyn Jackson; and one grandson. Surviving are her husband, William H. Kanott; five daughters, Tootie Kanott, Cookie Wolfe, Kathy "Rock" Burgess and Nancy Wahnettah, all of Cherokee, and Branda Kanott of Denver, Colo.; three sons, Mark "Moe" Kanott of Cherokee, Dennie Kanott of Spartanburg, S.C., and Brad Kanott of the home; four sisters, Edie Bradley and Sadie Jackson of Cherokee, Jean Bryant of Charleston, S.C., and Barbara Robie of Cherokee; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell will officiate. Burial will be in Parris Cemetery. He was a resident of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, and was a son of the late Charlie Mack and Stella Browning Bryson. He retired from Borden Chemicals in High Point. He was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Bryson. Surviving are two sons, Billy Ray Bryson Jr. of Winston-Salem and Wilfred E. Bryson; two sisters; five brothers; and nine grandchildren. "Buck" Bishop, 79, of Thomas Valley Road, Whittier, died Monday, May 21, 2001, in Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Petty Funeral Home chapel in Landrum, S.C. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Landrum. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. A native of Union, S.C., he had lived in Jackson County since 1989 and was the son of the late Fant and Mattie Bishop. He was a retired carpenter and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife of 53 1/2 years, Margaret M. Bishop; one daughter, Gail Sansbury of Boynton Beach, Fla.; two sons, Gary Lynn Bishop of the home and Lawrence Bishop of Boynton Beach, Fla.; one sister, Sars Landford of Inman, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
