Monteith Monteith

Jordan Monteith

Jordan A. Monteith, 4, of Purple Mountain Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 2, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church, which he attended. The Revs. Rich Peoples and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Jacob Monteith, Kevin Monteith, Delos Monteith and Johnny Painter.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., he had been a resident of Sylva for the past two years. He attended Rocking Horse Preschool. Surviving are his mother, Lisa Monteith of Sylva; and grandparents, Denver and Doris Painter Monteith of Sylva.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Michael Blanton

Von Michael "Mike" Blanton, 55, of Simpsonville, S.C., died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at his residence.

Memorial services were held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Mauldin First Baptist Church, where he was a member.

He was the son of Mary Ida Cope Blanton of Sylva and the late Von L. Blanton.

He was an industrial engineer and owner of Cline Associates Inc., an engineering consulting firm.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Dorothy Marie Culp Blanton; two sons, Marcus Von Blanton of Simpsonville and Jeffrey Ryan Blanton of Westminster, S.C.; a sister, Sheila B. King of St. Augustine, Fla.; and a grandson.

Cremation Society of South Carolina in Greenville was in charge of arrangements.



Mary Bishop

Mary E. Hall Bishop, 72, of Morganton, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, following many years of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Graveside services followed at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Jackson County and a member of South Mountain Baptist Church in Morganton, she was the daughter of the late Felix T. and Lula B. Hall. She was also preceded in death by brothers George B. Hall and Richard H. Ashe.

Surviving are her husband, Alfred Ray Bishop; one son, Gary Bishop of Nebo; three daughters, Janice Laws of Morganton, Joyce Scott of Glenwood and Joanie Butler of Grifton; two brothers, Wade Hall of Sylva and Mont Hall of Lyman, Wash.; three sisters, Inez Hurst of Franklin; Vera Cope of Sylva and Irene Bishop of Sylva; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ferrell Driskell

Ferrell B. Driskell, 68, of Franklin, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at his home.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5, in Old Savannah Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Chuck Foster and Dr. Matthew Mahar officiated.

A native of Taylor County, Ga., he had lived in Western North Carolina most of his life. He was the son of Ruth Martin Driskell of Stockbridge, Ga., and the late Murray E. Driskell.

He attended Emory University and graduate from Georgia State University's program in hospital administration. He was associated with Harris Regional Hospital during the 1950s and retired from DuPont Co. in Brevard after 30 years of service.

He was a member of Iotla United Methodist Church and sang in the choir.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Betty Cagle Driskell; a son, Alan Driskell of Asheville; and a sister, Jackie Edmonson of Stockbridge, Ga.

Rachel Sneed

Rachel Blythe Sneed, 85, of John Sneed Road, Cherokee, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, at Macedonia Baptist Church. The Revs. Jim Parks and Bo Parris officiated. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Jane Dormire Blythe; her husband, John G. Sneed Sr., who died April 1997; and a grandson.

Surviving are a son, John G. Sneed Jr. of Rock Hill, S.C.; two sisters, Katherine Blythe Sanders of Cherokee and Irene Bradley Smith of Spartanburg, S.C.; one brother, Morgan Bradley of Morristown, Tenn.; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Leonard Pressley

Leonard E. Pressley, 63, of Breedlove Road, Glenville, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 1, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Hamburg Baptist Church. The Revs. Matt Ledbetter and Lester Sutton officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Arnold Nicholson, Roger Rasnic, Felix Villereal, Ray Fowler, Todd Dillard and Verner Rice. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Bryson and Buster Lanning.

A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he retired from Cullasaja Club, where he had worked in the waste water treatment plant.

He was a member of Hamburg Baptist Church, where he was a deacon since 1980 and held many other offices in the church. He was the son of Ruby Lucille Breedlove Pressley of Glenville and the late Doyle B. Pressley.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 36 years, Wilma Annice Adkins Pressley; three daughters, Roberta Jennings of Norton, Cyndi Pressley of Cullowhee and Nicholette Boutte of Cashiers; a sister, Velda Lovell of Smrna, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hamburg Baptist Church Youth Fund or Building Fund.

Sylvia Sutton

Sylvia Obilene Boulet Sutton, 97, of Sylva, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Sylva First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Paul Christy and Phyllis Glahn officiated. Burial was in Keener Cemetery.

A native of Burburre, France, she was a homemaker, a member of Sylva First United Methodist Church and the daughter of the late Justin and Victoria Marie Dautrich Boulet.

She was the wife of the late J. Baston Sutton. She was also preceded in death by a son, J. Boyd Sutton.

Surviving are a son, John Kenneth Sutton of Tuckasegee; four daughters, Mary Janese Colaric of Euclid, Ohio, Brenda Hopkins of Ontario, Calif., Jeanne McElroy of Sylva and Edna Waldrop of Webster; one sister, Edna Chapin of McMinnville, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Alpha Rodriguez

Alpha Omega Rodriguez, infant, of Cullowhee, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 6, at Queen Cemetery. The Rev. Jerry Hagan officiated.

Daniel Bryson

Daniel Joe Bryson Jr., 40, of Elm Street, Sylva, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 2, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at Liberty Baptist Church. The Rev. Wanda Moore officiated. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 4, 1962, to Mary and Daniel J. Bryson Sr. of Sylva. He attended Sylva-Webster High School and Winston-Salem State University. He was a member of Logan Memorial Church in Morganton.

An athlete in both high school and college, he received all-conference status in both basketball and football. He was captain of both teams at Sylva-Webster and earned the honor of All-CIAA.

Surviving are his wife, Lee Cole Hoyl-Bryson; a son, Garrett Bryson of the home; two brothers, Gary Bryson of Sylva and Ronnie Bryson of Clyde; three sisters, Patricia Armstrong of Atlanta, Glenda Bryson-Jacobs of Raleigh and Kimberly Bryson of Sylva.

Nora Cogdill

Nora Lee Henry Cogdill, 89, of Sylva, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Gerald Morris and Wayne Sorrells officiated. Burial was in Keener Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bob Henry, Joe Henry, Alan Henry, Dale Henry, Dick Henry and Don Dalton.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Dahl and Tina Phillips Henry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Cogdill, who died in 1976; a son, Ray Cogdill Jr.; three sisters, Iva Lee Henson, Marie Painter and Lucy Crawford; three brothers, Carl Henry, Fred Henry and Frank Henry; and a grandson. She was the last surviving member of her family.

She owned and operated the Towne Shop for many years, was dorm mother at Western Carolina University and taught cooking classes at various community colleges throughout Western North Carolina.

Surviving are her son, Sam Cogdill of Sylva; two daughters, Jeanne C. Sneed of Bryson City and Tina C. Stovall of Asheville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Verda Gregg

Verda Cross Gregg, 86, of Silver Springs, Fla., formerly of Sylva, died Sunday, May 5, 2002.

Born in Redlevel, Ala., she was a homemaker and a Presbyterian by faith.

Surviving are her daughter, Beverly Roy of Silver Springs; a brother, Durwood Cross of Dothan, Ala.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Roberts Funeral Home in Ocala, Fla., was in charge of arrangements.



Dorothy Pressley

Dorothy Wilson Pressley, 76, of Pisgah Forest, died Saturday, May 4, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Brevard Wesleyan Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Don Milstead and Morris Davis officiated. Burial was in Pisgah Gardens Cemetery.

Born in Wendling, Ore., she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Jerdie Wilson. A former resident of Jackson County, she spent her adult life in Transylvania County.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred W. Baumgarner and Anna Belle W. Hebert.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Clarence "Dink" Pressley; two sons, Wayne Pressley of Amelia Island, Fla., and Jeff Pressley of Brevard; two daughters, Gail P. Collins and Lynn P. Mims, both of Brevard; two sisters, Lois W. Crawford of Mills River and Rozena W. Augeri of Higganum Conn.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Carl Hill

Col. Carl Richard Hill, 94, of Winterville, Ga., died Sunday, May 5, 2002.

Funeral services were held in Arlington National Cemetery.

A native of Williamsport, Pa., he was the son of the late Frank and Mary Estella Case Hill. Following graduation from Williamsport High School, he attended Bucknell University and later received a bachelor's degree from the University of the District of Columbia. He received his master's degree from the University of Georgia.

He joined the U.S. Army as a private in 1930 and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Engineer Reserves in 1935. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps until 1937.

For the next three years he was a science teacher in Washington, D.C. In 1940 he returned to the Army and served until 1961, reaching the rank of colonel. During this time, he served in the Philippines, Korea and Japan.

After his military career, he taught at the University of Georgia and Western Carolina University.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Hill; two sons, the Rev. Carl Richard Hill Jr. of Canton, Ga., and Daniel Henry Hill of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two daughters, Susan Jayne of New Orleans and Merrilee Ann Mobley of Marietta, Ga.; one sister, Iris Evans of Fredericks burg, Va.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Western Carolina University Development Foundation for the St. David's Award, Cullowhee, N.C. 28723.

Doyle Powell

Doyle C. Powell, 73, of Sylva, died Sunday, May 5, 2002.

Memorial services were held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Jim Ed Powell and Jeff Powell officiated. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed Powell and Amy Lewis Powell; a brother, Jerry Powell; and two sisters, Patsy Powell and Laura Brooks.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Betty Smith Powell; a son, Doyle Richard Powell; a daughter, Tina Powell Henry; two brothers, George and Jim Ed Powell; five sisters, Lois Powell Cogdill, Agnes Coggins, Ora Berrier, Betty Walker and Louise Deitz; and a granddaughter.
