Bettye MartinBettye Scarborough Martin, 72, of Nickle Mine Lane, Webster, died Saturday, April 29, in Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Sylva First Baptist Church. The Rev. Ed Beddingfield officiated. Pallbearers were Jack Farmer, Frank Crawford, Gary Frye, Jim Culp, Gene Middleton and E.J. Pullium. Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at Roan Memorial Gardens in Rockwood, Tenn. A native and former resident of Roan County, Tenn., she was a resident of Jackson County and member of Sylva First Baptist Church. She retired as a teacher psychologist from the Harriman, Tenn., and Owensboro, Ky., public school systems. She was a member of the Jaycettes and Beta Sigma Phi. She was a former pianist for the Lions, Rotary and Kiwanis clubs and for 38 years was the organist and pianist at Trenton Street Baptist Church in Harriman, Tenn., and for five years at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Owensboro, Ky., where she was a former resident. She was past president of East Tennessee Area Teachers. She was the daughter of the late Lon and Bessie Storie Duff and wife of the late Walter Harold Scarbrough. Surviving are her husband, Leslie K. Martin; two sons, Sidney Stewart and Sanford Keith Scarbrough of Harriman, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth Scott Martin of Owensboro, Ky., and Linda Kay Blood of Alamogordo, N.M.; one brother, Earl Carlton Duff of Harriman, Tenn.; one sister, Thelma D. Moates of Knoxville, Tenn., and four grandchildren. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Jerry PowellJerry Powell, 49, of Walnut Cove Road, Tuckasegee, died Friday, April 28, in Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 1, at Tuckasegee Wesleyan Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. James Manley and Carl Adams officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Wayne Mosteller, Wayne Powell, Joe Nardello, Earl Phillips, Virgle Brown and Steve Luker. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was superintendent with Blalock and Son Construction Co. He was a son of the late Edd and Lucy Daves Powell. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Laura Brooks and Patsy Powell. Surviving are his wife, Wanda Conner Powell; one son, the Rev. Jeff Powell; three sisters, Lois Powell Cogdill of Sylva, Ora Berrier of Kings Mountain and Agnes Coggins of Tuckasegee; two half sisters, Louise Deitz of Hindsville, Ga., and Betsy Walker of Lakeland, Fla.; two brothers, the Rev. Jim Ed Powell of Cullowhee and George Powell of Tuckasegee; and one half brother, Doyle Powell of Sylva. Memorials may be made to Tuckasegee Wesleyan Church Building Fund, P.O. 'Hump' Crowe"Hump" Crowe, 49, of Cherokee's Big Y community, died Friday, April 28, at Mission St. Joseph's Health Care System.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Old Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Denny Crowe officiated. Burial was in the Crowe Family Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a son of the late Joseph Carroll Crowe. He was preceded in death by one son, Ute Goingback Crowe. Surviving are his mother, Jean Maney Johnson of Cherokee; two sons, Donovan Dean Crowe and Dallas Edward Crowe, both of Cherokee; one daughter, Daisy Crowe of Cherokee; one brother, Carroll "PeeWee" Crowe of Cherokee; and five grandchildren. Silas AndersonSilas Stuart Anderson, 89, died Tuesday, March 28, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, Wash., from complications due to leukemia.There was no funeral service. A native of South Carolina, he lived in New York State and the Midwest before moving to North Carolina in 1961. He and his wife made their home at Webster, where he retired. He was a teacher, beginning his career in a one-room country school house and ending as a member of the psychology faculty at Western Carolina University. After retirement, he dedicated himself to volunteer activities in support of senior citizens and community social services. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Gray Anderson. Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity. Gertrude WoodardGertrude Woodard, 75, of Pumpkintown Road, Sylva, died Thursday, April 27, in Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at Zion Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. Keith Ashe, Eddie Stillwell and Benny Bagwell officiated. Burial was in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late George Washington and Ella Webb Woodard. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lester Woodard. Surviving are two brothers, Alonzo and Verley Woodard, both of Sylva; and two sisters, Edna Bingham of Sylva and Villa Mae Adams of Waynesville. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Robert PainterRobert Odell "Bobby" Painter, 66, of Skyland Care Center, Sylva, died Wednesday, April 26, at the center after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Locust Field Baptist Church Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson county, he was a retired truck driver with Tuckasegee Mills. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a son of the late Robert Montgomery and Ruth Brendle Painter. Surviving are his wife, Lucille Hensley Painter; one daughter, Kathy Jones of Franklin; one son, Jerry Painter of Dillsboro; two sisters, Nina Cabe and Ivey Daves, both of Sylva; one brother, H.B. Painter of High Point; and three grandchildren. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Henry GreenarchHenry E. Greenarch, 77, of Whitleyville, Tenn., died Tuesday, May 2, at the Cumberland River Hospital North in Celina, Tenn.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Moody Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens. The son of the late William H. and Girtrude Wood Greenarch, he was a retired cafeteria employee of Western Carolina University. A native of Sylva, he was a resident of the Indian Creek community of Jackson County, Tenn. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Surviving is one sister, Geneva Lineberry of Sylva. |
