Cline Cline

Johnny Cline

Johnny Allen Cline, 2, of Wagonwheel Gap Road, Cherokee, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, in Cherokee Indian Hospital from injuries sustained in an accident.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Doug Mathews officiated. Burial was in Hyatt Cemetery.

He was born in Jackson County and lived in Swain County. He was a son of Donald Carl and Lillie Marlene Tolley Cline.

Surviving, in addition to the parents, are two sisters, Melissa Cline and Sarah Cline of the home; one brother, William Cline of the home; maternal grandmother, Sarah Swaney of Cherokee; maternal grandfather, Leonard Tolley of Cherokee; paternal grandparents, Marcell and Barbara Sue Cline of Cherokee; maternal great-grandmother, Ollie Tolley of Bryson City; paternal great-grandfather, Jess Griffin of Virginia; and maternal great-great-grandmother, Rachel Wattey of Cherokee.



Bryson Bryson

Clyde Bryson

Clyde M. Bryson, 84, of Charleys Creek, Tuckasegee, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Sols Creek Baptist Church, which he attended. The Revs. Jim Ed Powell, Carol Adams and Johnny Norris officiated. Burial was in Clyde M. Bryson Memorial Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired logger and son of the late Joe and Ruthie Parker Bryson.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Ola Irene Woodring Bryson; five daughters, Girleen Young and Una Lee Mull, both of Tuckasegee, Emma Jane Massingale and Marcell Woodard, both of Sylva, and Wanda Bryson of Winston-Salem; five sons, Leonard Bryson, Preston Bryson, Ernest Bryson and Clyde Bryson Jr., all of Tuckasegee, and David Bryson of Virginia; 12 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Sols Creek Baptist Church.

Bryson Bryson

Thomas Bryson

Thomas Logan Bryson, 81, of Cashiers, died Sunday, April 29, 2002, at Mountain Trace Nursing Home after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in Cashiers Baptist Church. The Rev. Art Fowler and Eric Moody officiated. Burial followed in Upper Zachary Cemetery, Cashiers. Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews, Chris and Mitch Bryson, Matt Franks, Michael, Tim and Scotty Petit.

A former logger and a retired carpenter, he was a worker on several dam projects. He was the eldest son of 10 children born to the late Walter Lee and Sally Dillard Bryson.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold, Edwin, Don, and Kenneth Bryson; and one sister, Frances Bryson Moore.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mary Hawkins Bryson; one son, Mike Bryson of Cashiers; one daughter, Sherry Bryson Franks of Glenville; three sisters, Ann Bryson Petit of Rosman, Barbara Bryson Moss of Cashiers and Aileen Bryson Morgan of San Clemente, Calif.; one brother, McKee Bryson of Lake Toxaway; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Aurlee Conner

Aurlee Brown Conner, 81, of Franklin, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, in a Sylva nursing home.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 29, at the Franklin Church of God. The Revs. Paul Brooks and Clark Sheffield officiated. Burial was in Tuckasegee Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gregg Conner, Johnney Ammons, Tom Raines, Chris Conner, Tommy Wheeler and Bobby McCall.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Lambert and Pauline Brown. She was a member of Franklin Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Conner, who died in 1983; two sons, Harvey G. Conner and William Ralph Conner Jr.; and one daughter, Betty Jo Conner.

Surviving are two sons, Floyd Ray Conner of Brevard and Clayman Dean Conner of Franklin; one sister, Mary McCall of Cashiers; one brother, Carl Brown of Franklin; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Lessie Pell

Lessie Reid Pell, 90, of Sylva, died Monday, April 29, 2002.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the East Sylva Baptist Church. The Revs. Charles and Jim Dean will officiate. Burial will be in Lovedale Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Carroll Hall, Steve Beck, Steve Alexander, C.L. Profitt, Astor Plemmons Jr., Mark Bennett, Thad Woods and Stacy Woods. Born June 29, 1911, in Transylvania County, she was a daughter of the late T. Wait Reid and Edda Stewart Reid. She was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church. She taught school for 38 years in Jackson County, Cashiers, Oak Ridge, Tuckasegee, Log Cabin, Haywood County and at Bethel Elementary. She was a craftsman and former member of Webster Crafters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hampton A. Pell Jr.; four brothers, Ford Reid, Howard Reid, Charlie Reid and T.W. Reid Jr.; and one sister, Jessie Reid. Surviving is one daughter, Junetta Pell of Sylva. Visitation was from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. Memorials may be made to the East Sylva Baptist Church. Elizabeth Dennis

Elizabeth L. Dennis, 53, of Richfield, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Stanley Memorial Hospital after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at noon Friday, April 26, at Campground Cemetery. The Rev. Harvey Gass officiated.

A native of Swain County, she had lived in Richfield for the past 15 years. She was the store manager with Pugh Oil Co. and daughter of the late Jack and Selma Messer Lambert.

Surviving are one daughter, Angie Mauldin of Richfield; three sisters, Lovicia Cole and Katherine Lambert, both of Whittier, and Betty Smith of Bryson City; three brothers, Bill Lambert of Bryson City, Claude Lambert of Richfield and David Lambert of Graham; and one grandchild.

Mary Bishop

Mary Bishop of Marion, formerly of Sylva, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at her daughterıs residence.

Peggy Jennings

Peggy Sue Hiott Jennings, 68, of Kitchens Branch, Sylva, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Private graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at Parris Cemetery.

A native of Seneca, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John and Sue Landers Hiott.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Harold Jennings; two daughters, Cathy Bell of Sylva and Renae Spears of Bryson City; one brother, Jimmy Hiott of Anderson, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to oneıs favorite charity.



Bonnie Jordan

Bonnie Virgil Jordan, 93, of Whittier, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Hyattıs Chapel Baptist Church. The Rev. Steve Webb officiated. Burial was in Sherrill Cemetery with nephews and friends serving as pallbearers.

She was born Aug. 10, 1908, in Jackson County to the late Otto and Severy Hughes Jordan. She was a homemaker and a member of Hyattıs Chapel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Qualla Fire and Rescue Department.

Jim Jones

Jim C. Jones, 72, of Barkers Creek Road, Whittier, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Tommy Ashe and David Burch officiated. Burial was in Old Field Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired meat cutter with F&P Supermarket and Potts Brothers Supermarket. He was a son of the late Ralph Jones and Mary Hooper Jones Buchanan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Mae Sellers Jones, who died in 1975.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Parris Gunter of Whittier; one son, Gene Parris of Atlanta; one brother, R.C. Buchanan of Sylva; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.



Hubert Kegler

Hubert "Toby" Kegler, 65, of Barkers Creek Road, Whittier, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mike Farmer officiated.

A native of Wilimantic, Conn., he had lived in Jackson County since 1975. He was a retired electrician at Western Carolina University, in the National Guard and was son of the late Hubert and Mildred Moriarty Kegler.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Alice Scott Kegler; one daughter, Jennifer Wright of Cleveland, Tenn.; one son, Jeffrey Kegler of the home; and two sisters, Muriel Lockwood of Okeechobee, Fla., and Linda Douglas of Live Oak, Fla.

Freda Ammons

Freda Lois Ammons, 48, of Cullowhee, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home, Bryson City. The Rev. Davis Hooper officiated. Burial was in Windy Gap Cemetery.

She was a native of Swain County, member of Hightower Baptist Church and worked as a nursing assistant for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Thelma Breedlove Ammons.

Surviving are three brothers, Harold Ammons of Franklin, Edwin Ammons of Connelly Springs and Stephen Ammons of Morganton; two sisters, Rhoda Ammons of Sylva and Doris "Dodie" Simons of Franklin.

Jackson Dunn

Jackson Freeman Dunn, 87, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Sylva, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at an assisted living residence.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at Sylva Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 30, at the Franke Home at Seaside in Mt. Pleasant. The family received friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at Moody Funeral Home in Sylva.

Born in Charlotte to the late Robert F. and Estelle Alexander Dunn, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II and received the Purple Heart. He was a graduate of N.C. State University and a member of Sylva Presbyterian Church.

He retired from the Mead Corp. in Sylva and was a member of several different organizations such as the Foremanıs Club within Mead, Rotary Club of Sylva, Inner Church groups of Sylva, former member of the Jackson County Draft Board, and Technical Association Pulp and Paper Industry. Throughout his life he supported American Red Cross blood drives.

Surviving are his wife, Nell Harper Dunn; one son, John F. Dunn of Mt. Pleasant; one daughter, Catherine Dunn Moses of Whittier; three brothers, Joseph B. Dunn of Greensboro, Lewis Dunn of Burgaw and Maurice Dunn of Charlotte; one sister, Mary Dunn Kearns of Pleasant Garden; and one grandson.

Ralph Mills

Ralph A. Mills, 52, of Ladderback Trail, Sylva, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 25, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Robert Blanton and J.D. Grant officiated. Burial was in Love Cemetery with military rites conducterd by Sylva American Legion Post 104.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, a retired construction worker, member of Ochre Hill Baptist Church and an Army veteran. He was the son of Lillie V. Cope Mills of Sylva and the late Luther Mills.

He was preceded in death by one son, Scotty "C.R." Mills.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are three daughters, Angela Mills of High Point, April Bradley of Canton and Wendy Jamison of Forest City; four sisters, Ruby Tackett of Cave City, Ark., and Louise Mills, Alva Dee Worley and Ruthie Bradley, all of Sylva; five brothers, Ervin, Ray, Charlie, Bo and Walt Mills of Sylva; and seven grandchildren.



Bessie Robinson

Bessie Mae Robinson, 79, of Crowell Farm Road, Asheville, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at her home.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, in the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Revs. Wade and Gwen Hall officiated. Burial was at Pisgah View Memorial Park.

She was born in Jackson County and was a daughter of the late June and Etta Raines Jamison. She was married to George B. Robinson, who died in 1993.

She attended worship services at The Dwelling Place Worship Center and was a volunteer with the Asheville VA Medical Center Ministry, the Hendersonville Prison Ministry and the Candler House of Prayer Street Ministry.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Isabelle Womack; and one brother, Fred Jamison.

Surviving are one daughter, Sheila Freeman of Asheville; one step granddaughter, Kayla Freeman of Asheville; one brother, Harry Jamison of Miami; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
