Dorothy PoundsDorothy Cecilia Reinert Pounds, 79, of Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of Sylva, died Friday, April 7.A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m. Burial was in Eternal Hills Memorial Park, Oceanside, Calif. A homemaker, she was the widow of the late Lowell Dale Pounds. Surviving are six sons, J. Dale Pounds of Cullowhee, Michael Paul Pounds of Summer, Wash., Thomas Anthony Pounds of Houston, Texas, Dennis James Pounds of Glenville, W.Va.; Mark Edward Pounds of Poway, Calif., and Joseph Steven Pounds of Carlsbad, Calif.; three daughters, Mary Scott Crawley of Indianapolis, Francis Kay Lindley of Pittsboro, Ind., Virginia Ann Beimfohr of Brownsburg, Ind.; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church of Sylva. Hazel McQueenHazel Welch McQueen, 52, of Tsali Manor, Cherokee, died Thursday, April 20, in Memorial Mission Hospital after an extended illness.Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, in Welch Family Cemetery. Isaac Welch and L. Gurganus of Wake Forest officiated. A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Isaac and Judith Marion French Welch. Surviving are her husband, David McQueen; two daughters, Allison Shinkman of Jefferson, Tenn., and Judy Hornbuckle of Cherokee; one son, Eddie Roberts of Cherokee; four sisters, Judith Alyne Welch Smith, Valorie Welch, Marvel Adrea Welch, and Ulela Kaine Welch Harris, all of Cherokee; three brothers, Isaac Welch of Asheville, Bruce Welch of Cherokee and Emory Welch of San Diego, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Jerry LambertJerry Lambert, 68, of Walkingstick Trail, Cullowhee, died Monday, April 24, at his residence.A native of Alabama, he was a resident of Tampa, Fla., and Cullowhee. He was a member of Seminole Heights Baptist Church and was a son of the late Jacob Clayton Lambert. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Carol C. Lambert of the home; his mother, Willie Mae C. Lambert of Gadsden, Ala.; one son, Jerry Jeffery Lambert of Charlotte; two daughters, Lisa Lambert of Lake City, Fla., and Tammy Steen of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, James Lambert of Gadsden, and Jack Lambert of Charlotte; one sister, Sarah Hatcher of Gadsden; and five grandchildren. Smith, 89, of Cullowhee Mountain Road, Cullowhee, died Sunday, April 23, in Harris Regional Hospital.No service is planned at this time. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. James MathisJames Dudley Mathis, 61, of Elm Street, Sylva, died Tuesday, April 25, at his residence.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Cowee Baptist Church. The Rev. Bobby Cloer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry, Dennis and Nolan Connor, Steve Estes, David Nichols and Harley McClure. J.D. and Steve Wilson will serve as honorary pallbearers. A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late William Anderson Mathis and Rebecca Magdalene Frizzell Mathis. He was a lifelong resident of Jackson and Macon counties and worked as a logger. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia ³Patty² Mathis; one stepson, John Carl Bates; one brother, Clyde Mathis; and one sister, Kathlene M. Wilson. Surviving are two sons, James William Lambert of Virginia and Chris Mathis of Sylva; two stepsons, Ronnie Bates and Nelson Metcalf, both of Franklin; four daughters, Alma McClure, Minnie Phillips and Jessica Mathis, all of Franklin, and Maggie Anne Mathis of Sylva; one stepdaughter, Peggy Roberts of Franklin; one brother, Paul Mathis of Franklin; four sisters, Alma Louise Hedden of Charlotte, Hassie Nichols of Franklin, and Hattie Nolita Estes and Mamie Biddix, both of Sylva; and 15 grandchildren. The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Bryant Funeral Home, Franklin. James JenkinsJames Robert Jenkins, 68, of Graham County, died Sunday, April 23, from lung cancer.A private service was held on Sunday, April 23, at the Old Mother Cemetery in Robbinsville. He joined Bill and Wilma Millsaps' Snowbird Mountain Boys in 1972, traveling with them extensively across the country. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcellus and Ella Kimsey Jenkins. Surviving are one sister, Lola Reed of Dalton, Ga.; and one brother, Johnny Jenkins of Dalton. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. |
