Margaret HawkMargaret Virginia Hawk, 78, of Sylvašs East Fork community, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in a Waynesville care center.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 13, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was at East Fork Cemetery. A native of Jackson County, she was a member of Deitz Memorial Baptist Church and a daughter of the late John Wesley and Ida Deitz Buchanan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Hawk; two brothers, John and Burl Buchanan; and three sisters, Ruth Roper, Edna Buchanan and Ruby Cabe. Surviving are one son, Marc Hawk of Sylva; one daughter, Glenna Hawk of Florida; two brothers, Bill Buchanan of Sylva and Morgan Buchanan of Marysville, Tenn.; one sister, Earlie Mae Cowan of Sylva; and four grandchildren. Virdie WoodVirdie Beck Wood, 83, of Revis Road, Whittier, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, in Swain County Hospital.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. The Revs. Ned Pressley, Larry Nations and Clifford Willis officiated. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Addie Mathis Beck and wife of the late Enoch Wood, who died in 1998. She was a member of Whittier Baptist Church. Surviving is one son, Eugene Wood of Whittier. Mildred CardenMildred Edith Carden, 80, of Sylva, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Harris Regional Hospital following a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Sylva First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joe Fulk officiated. Pallbearers were grandchildren and nephews. She was born in Buncombe County to Dewey and Jessie Snyder Brendle of Haywood County. She was a member of United Methodist Women and of Sylva First United Methodist Church, of which she was a former Sunday school teacher. Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Asbury Carden; two daughters, Lou Ann Carden of Sylva and Kay Babecki of Ooltewah, Tenn.; one son, John Carden of Candler; two sisters, Margaret Brendle Boyd and Ruby Brendle Ferguson, both of Waynesville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Foundation, P.O. Box 296, Sylva, N.C. 28779. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Martha WatsonMartha Belle Watson, 74, of Cullowhee, died Friday, April 13, 2001, in Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 16, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Steve Webb officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, daughter of the late Howard and Effie Lindsey Hoyle, and wife of the late Albert G. Watson. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, Albert Mitchell Watson and Danny Watson, both of Cullowhee, and Jeff Watson of Port St. Johns, Fla.; three daughters, Marie Chastain of Tuckasegee, Linda Fisher of Cullowhee and Gladys Lee of Port St. Johns, Fla.; four sisters, Faye Watson, Mildred Watson and Barbara Henry, all of Cullowhee, and Lois Hensley of Dillsboro; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Flora MillsFlora Henry Mills, 93, of the Willets community of Sylva, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Harris Regional Hospital.Melton-Riddle Funeral Home will announce arrangements. |
