The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Cabe Cabe

Town board member Eldon Cabe dies at 68

Eldon G. Cabe, 68, of Dillsboro Road, Sylva, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.The Revs. Ben Cabe and Robert Clegg officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104 and Jimmy Dillard VFW Post 10685.

Pallbearers were Clyde Vance, Lee Tritt, Lionel Brooks, Bill Foxx, Walter Ray Bradley, Richard McHargue, Wayne Hooper and Charles Long. Honorary pallbearers were M.L. Tritt Sr., Dewey Crowe, Fritz Hildebrandt and James Streeter.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired in 1996 as a maintenance supervisor with Jackson County. He was serving his second term as a commissioner with Sylva Town Council.

He was a member of the Jackson County Democrat Men, a U.S. Army veteran and a life member of Jimmy Dillard VFW Post 10685. He was a member of New Savannah Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday school director.

He was a son of the late Rev. Grover and Odessa Deitz Cabe.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Luthenia Shirley; and three brothers, Samuel, Charlie and Jim Cabe.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Anne Fisher Cabe; three daughters, Cathy Cabe Foxx, Christi Cabe Young and Cindy Cabe, all of Sylva; one son, William Eldon "Bill" Cabe of Sylva; four sisters, twins Irene and Christine Fowler of Lexington, Mildred Cabe Buchanan of Lexington and Ruth Cabe Cantrell of Baldwin, Ga.; two brothers, the Rev. Ben Lee Cabe and Andrew Cabe of Sylva; and seven grandchildren.

Gifford Gifford

Melanie Gifford

Melanie Laurie Gifford, 45, of South Pekin, Ill., and Cullowhee, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.

A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Sylva Church of Christ. The Rev. John Barron, her cousin, officiated. Cremation has been accorded.

Born Jan. 16, 1958, in Gainesville, Fla., to Leland and Francile Keith Waters, she married Carl L. Gifford on June 16, 1990, in Cullowhee.

In 1980, she earned her bachelor of science degree in law enforcement and in 1989 she earned her bachelor of science degree in therapeutic recreation, both from Western Carolina University.

She last worked at St. Joseph's Home in West Peoria in 1999. She previously worked many years as a police officer and as the first female deputy sheriff in Columbia County, Ga. She was a member of the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation and a life member of the National Rifle Association. She was a member of Court Street Church of Christ in Pekin.

Surviving are her husband and her parents of Cullowhee.

Helen Duke

Helen "Susie" Duke, 41, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, in Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Cullowhee Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Joe Yelton officiated. Burial was in Cullowhee Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dean Duke, Steve Baxley, Marcus Roberts, Pat Angel, Baxter Wood and David Ward. Alternates were Johnny Savva and Chris Houston.

She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but grew up in Madison, W.Va. She had been a resident of Cullowhee since 1983. Daughter of the late Andrew Y. and Mary Jo Ball Savva, she was employed at Western Carolina University, where she worked in Dodson Cafeteria. She was a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Joseph Savva.

Surviving are her husband, Michael Duke; two brothers, Johnny Andrew Savva of Fayetteville and Allen Lee Savva of Madison; and one sister, Anna Marie Savva of Madison.

Amanda Ensley

Amanda Parker Ensley, 90, of Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Balsam Grove Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Clifford Parker and Abe Brooks officiated. Burial was in Balsam Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jason Ensley, Eddie Ensley, Mike Ensley, Kevin Adams, Jim Moss and Martin Cook.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was daughter of the late P.L. and Rebecca Watson Parker.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Carol, Bobby and Clifton Ensley; one daughter, Betty Vickers; two grandsons; four brothers; and one sister.

Surviving are her husband of 72 years, Ervin Ensley; two daughters, Glenda Owen of Tuckasegee and Mary Adams of Cullowhee; one son, Blaine Ensley of Cullowhee; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one stepgranddaughter and one step-great-grandson.

Samuel Lambert

Samuel Dock Lambert, 80, of Cherokee, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Haywood Regional Medical Center in Clyde.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 31, at Goose Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Dan Lambert and James Red Bradley officiated. Burial was in Tow String Cemetery. Pallbearers were members of Tribal EMS.

He was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Cherokee, the son of the late Samuel Claude and Mae Smith Lambert. He was the assistant pastor of Goose Creek Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Elizabeth, who died Feb. 27, 1993.

Surviving are three sons; Ted Lambert of Cherokee, Mike Lambert of Akin, S.C., and Sam Lambert of Cherokee; two daughters, Madge Owle and Sandy Sneed, both of Cherokee; one sister, Alice Queen of Brevard; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Beatrice Walk

Beatrice Smith Walk, 77, of Cherokee, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at her residence.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday. March 31, in Bethel Cemetery. The Rev. James Sneed officiated.

A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Sally Rogers Smith. She lived for several years in Pennsylvania before moving back to Cherokee. She was a member of Big Witch Baptist Church and was the wife of the late Delbert Walk.

Surviving are three sons, Delbert Walk Jr. of Cherokee, Michael E. Walk of Sylva and Dennis Walk of Cherokee; three daughters, Rachel Glasgow of Jacksonville, Fla., Sandra Ward of Cherokee and Delcey Walk of Cherokee; one brother, Edwin Smith of Spartanburg, S.C.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Norma Queen

Norma Jean B. Queen, 63, of Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at Johns Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Clifford Parker and Mike Fox officiated. Burial was in Balsam Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Doyle Shuler, Mack Queen, David Mathis, Arthur Sluder, Avery Brown and Dustin Jones.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Mary Brown Phillips and General Brown.

Surviving are her husband of 44 years, Luther Queen; one son, Ricky Queen of Cullowhee; one sister, Linda Shular of Cullowhee; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Herbert Zachmann

Herbert H. Zachmann Jr., 64, of 13 Locust Drive, Sylva, died unexpectedly at Harris Regional Hospital Sunday, March 30, 2003.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Loy Kennedy will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Born June 3, 1938, in Detroit, he retired to Sylva 15 years ago after a career in law enforcement. He was a son of the late Herbert and Anna Kipper Zachmann Sr. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Greene Zachmann; one daughter, Lisa Toney of Belmont, Calif.; one son, Kenneth Robert Zachmann of Mountain View, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Brina Myers of Sylva; two sisters, Helen Frick of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Betty Rice of Royal Oak, Mich.; three brothers, John Zachmann of Melvindale, Mich., Eric Zachmann of Brighton, Mich., and Ray Zachmann of White Lake Township, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

Ruby Caldwell

Ruby Cooper Caldwell, 90, of Whittier, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, in a Sylva care facility after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. R. Hal Finney officiated. Burial was at Swain Memorial Park.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Nora Tritt Cooper. She was a member of Whittier United Methodist Church, was retired as a postal clerk from Whittier Post Office with 32 years of service, was a charter member of the Whittier Community Club and former member of the Whittier Extension Homemakers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Silas Wayne Caldwell, who died March 16, 1987; two brothers, Dennis Cooper and Paul Tid Cooper; and three sisters, Elnora Conner, Una Gallaway and Hettie Crisp.

Surviving are one brother, Earl Cooper of Whittier; and five sisters, Estelle Gibson of Whittier, Lenora Rogers of Sylva, Ditts Snyder of Lexington, Louise Maney of Lakeland, Fla., and Beulah Kinsland of Whittier.

Brona Young

Brona Lee Robinson Young, 86, of Morning Side Assisted Living Center, Rock Hill, S.C., died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center Mercy South in Pineville.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the northwest chapel of Greene Funeral Home. The Revs. Bernie Lewis and David Kemp officiated. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park.

Daughter of the late Thomas Jackson Robinson and Effie Bryson Robinson, she was a member of First Assembly of God and was retired from Hoechst Celanese with 33 years of service. She was a native of Jackson County.

Surviving are one son, Conrad Young of Rock Hill; one daughter, Juanita B. Harrison of Rock Hill; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.


Mildred Browning

Mildred R. Browning, 79, of Sylva, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Brona Young

Brona Lee Robinson Young, 86, of Morning Side Assisted Living Center, Rock Hill, S.C., died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center Mercy South in Pineville.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the northwest chapel of Greene Funeral Home. The Revs. Bernie Lewis and David Kemp officiated. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park.

Daughter of the late Thomas Jackson Robinson and Effie Bryson Robinson, she was a member of First Assembly of God and was retired from Hoechst Celanese with 33 years of service. She was a native of Jackson County.

Surviving are one son, Conrad Young of Rock Hill; one daughter, Juanita B. Harrison of Rock Hill; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.


Dillard Moore

The Rev. Dillard E. Moore, 65, of Montieth Branch Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Moses Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Don Moffitt, Hardin Nicholson and Mike Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Old Field Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday) at Moody Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was an ordained minister in Jackson County since 1973, serving in several churches, including Fall Cliff, Rockdale and Moses Creek Baptist Church for 22 years. He was a son of the late Ernest E. and Mary Pauline Dillard Moore.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Levon Lewis Moore; two sons, Toby Moore of Sylva and Richard Moore of Broadway; one daughter, Kay M. Kelly of Sylva; two brothers, Thomas Edward Moore of Asheville and Phillip Ray Moore of Lowell; four sisters, Doris Ann Whitehead of Sylva, Brittie Troutman of Trinity, Etta Lou Bradley of Whittier and Marcia Raby of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
