Irene Leddy

Leddy Irene Leddy, 48,of Reno, Nev., died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, after a period of declining health.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Long Branch Baptist Church.

A native of the Philippines, she lived in Sylva for a short period of time.

Surviving are her husband of 27 years, John Leddy Sr.; one daughter, Jorene Amster of Sylva; one son, John Leddy of Tuscon, Ariz; her mother, Alice K. Ghent of Reno, Nev.; three sisters, Barbara Morrison of Hawaii, Janice Nakazowa of Los Angeles and Betty Catan of Washington state; one brother, David Ghent of San Francisco; and five grandchildren.


Wilhelm Koenighaus

Wilhelm J. Koenighaus, 90, of Sylva, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Skyland Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Dr. Bob Rigdon officiated.

A native of Germany, he had lived in Jackson County since 1981. He came to America on Dec. 2, 1951, on the USS America to the Port of New York. He was a veteran of the German army, serving in WWII. He attended Sylva Church of Christ and was a retired automobile mechanic. He was the son of the late Wilhelm J. and Maria Beshe Koenighaus Sr. He was the husband of Margarete Koenighaus, who died in 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Wilhelm Koenighaus of Sylva and Werner W. Koenighaus of Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Carol Dausch

Carol Alayne Rose Dausch, 69, of Dills Branch Road, Sylva, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Services and burial will be private.

She contracted poliomyelitis while a full scholarship student at Grillnnell College in Iowa. After years of rehabilitation for extensive paralysis, she returned to college, later married and did graduate work at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey and Notre Dame University in Indiana in mathematics.

During her 32 years residing in Mandham township, N.J., she was a homemaker, little league coach, bookkeeper for visiting homemakers of Morris County, N.J., and a financial officer for a non-profit organization. She was also an architectural home designer and was an early activist for obtaining rights for the legitimately handicapped.

She was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Mandham and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sylva.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Vernon L. Dausch; one son, James J. Dausch of Port Murray, N.J.; three brothers, Alan Rose of Ormond Beach, Fla., Paul Rose of Belvidere, N.J., and Evan Rose of Columbia, Md.; and two grandchildren.

Since she was a four-year cancer survivor, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 925, Sylva, N.C. 28779.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Imo Jean Owen

Imo Jean Owen, 61, of Charleys Creek Road, Tuckasegee, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Charleys Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Wayne Hoxit and John Bates officiated. Burial was at Bates Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bobby Owen, Casey Owen, Chris Owen, James Davis, Conard Bates, Denver Ashe, Julian Bates and Billy Jackson.

A native of Cherokee County and former resident of Rosman, she retired from American Thread Co. in Rosman, was a former school bus driver for Jackson County Schools and a member of Charleys Creek Baptist Church.

She was a daughter of Flonnie Bates of Tuckasegee and the late Lester Bates.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Lester Bates Jr., and one half-brother, Dickie Roberts. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Arvol Owen; one son, Bobby Owen of Tuckasegee; two daughters, Carlene Galloway of Tuckasegee and Janet Davis of Sylva; three brothers, James Bates of Tuckasegee and the Rev. John Bates and Larry Bates, both of Pickens, S.C.; one half-brother, Willard Bates of Rock Hill, S.C.; two sisters, Juanita Hoxit of Tuckasegee and Martha Goins of Cleveland, Tenn.; one half-sister, Jamae Owenby of Murphy; and seven grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Cline Satewart

Cline C. Stewart, 80, of Cullowhee Mountain Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at Pine Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Everette Wilson and Wesley Hooper officiated. Burial was in Pine Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Chris Tucker, Hal Burnett, Mark Junaluska, Ricky Henderson and Robby Shelton. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a member of Pine Creek Baptist Church. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater. Additionally, he was a member of Mike Martin VFW Post 9493 in Tuckasegee.

He retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation and was the son of the late Charlie and Perle Stewart.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Stewart Kelly; and two sisters, Lucille Tucker and Blanche Wright.

Surviving are his wife, Frankie Stewart; and two sisters, Denver Henderson of Webster and Winnie Stewart of Sylva.

Memorials may be made to Pine Creek Cemetery Fund, Sylva.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Etahel Kitchin

Ethel R. Kitchin, 87, of Warren, Ohio, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at her residence, following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at Champion Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Champion Township Cemetery, Ohio.

A native of Mineral Bluff, Ga., she had lived in North Carolina. In 1943, she moved to the Warren area. She was a homemaker and a member of Champion Presbyterian Church and Champion VIPs. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Ray and Hattie Ward. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sheila Thompson.

Surviving are her husband of 69 years, Julius H. Kitchin; one daughter, Hilda Middleton of Champion, Ohio; one son, Edward Kitchin of Southington, Ohio; one daughter, Linda Haines of Champion, Ohio; one brother, Bill Ray of Sylva; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northeast Ohio or Champion Presbyterian Church. Carl W. Hall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
