Ensley Ensley

Howard Ensley

Howard Ensley, 76, of Tellico, Tenn., died Saturday, March 9, at Sunbridge Health Care Center of LaFollette, Tenn.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 11, at Sharp Funeral Home in Tennessee. Burial and graveside services were Tuesday, March 12, at Anderson Memorial Gardens.

Ensley was a businessman who employed many residents of Campbell County, Tenn., and neighboring counties through his coal and trucking enterprises. Originally from Jackson County, he built dams and roads in North Carolina before moving to Oliver Springs, Tenn., where he worked for Frank Jackson in the coal mining business.

Later, he moved to Campbell County where he started, owned and operated Howard Ensley Coal Company and Radar Coal Company and became a partner in Big H Coal Company. He also owned several trucking businesses.

Surviving are his wife, Frankie Smith Ensley, two daughters, Doris Alene Douglas of Atlanta, Ga., and Dorothy Jean Burrus of Newcomb, Tenn.; one son, Howard Ensley Jr. of Newcomb, Tenn.; three sisters, Peggy Anders of Tuckasegee, Ester Lee Broome of Glenville, and Genevieve Broome of Maryland; and two great-grandchildren.



David Parker, Sylva merchant for 45 years, dies at age 86

Longtime Sylva businessman David Talmadge Parker, 86, of Frady Cove Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002. He was a merchant in Sylva for 45 years, operating the Blue Ribbon Shoe Store and Sylva Supply Company until his retirement.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at Lovedale Baptist Church. The Revs. Mike Farmer, J.D. Grant and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Clifford Parker, Chad Cabe, Russ Cagle, Billy Cagle, G. W. Revis and Carroll Hall. Honorary pallbearers were Henry Ashe and Jim Hamilton.

A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Lem and Celia Parker. He was a member of Lovedale Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and trustee. He was also a member of Dillsboro Masonic Lodge 459 and a former member of the board of directors at First Citizens Bank and C.J. Harris Home Health.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Nina Plemmons.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Frances McCracken Parker; one daughter, Shirley Simpson, of Cullowhee; two sons, Billy D. Parker of Whittier and Bobby T. Parker of Sylva; one brother, Harry Parker of Georgetown, S.C.; one sister, Alice Stanford of Sylva; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

George Nuzzo

George Pasqual Nuzzo, 69, of Waynesville, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at his residence after a period of declining health.

A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Paul Christy and Rev. Joe Fulk officiated.

A native of Patterson, N.J. and a former resident of North Haledon, N.J., he moved to Waynesville from Treasure Island, Fla., in 1990. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army, a member of St. John's Catholic Church in St. Petersburg, Fla., and was employed by Allison's Inc. of Sylva. He was a son of the late George and Edvige Decapatine Nuzzo.

Surviving are his wife, Marlaine Nuzzo of the home; four sons, Rick Nuzzo of Stewart, Fla., Ron Nuzzo of Seminole, Fla., and Raymond and Russell Nuzzo, both of Waynesville; one brother, Frank Nuzzo of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Annie Myers

Annie Mae Ward Myers, 83, of Whittier, a resident of Mountain Trace Nursing Center, died Saturday, March 16, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Cabe Lambert and Steve Webb officiated. Burial was at the Ward Cemetery on Camp Creek in Whittier. Pallbearers were Cecil Queen, Timothy Queen, Steve Queen, Eddie Cook, Everette Reagan and Ed Jenkins.

A native of Jackson County, where she lived most of her life, she was a daughter of the late John Ward and Dora Lizzy Oxner Ward.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Ward.

Surviving are one son, Cecil Doc Queen of Whittier; one daughter, Shirley Settlemyer of New Mexico; three brothers, Edward Ward, David Ward and Charles Ward, all of Whittier; one sister, Mary Emma Reagan of Whittier; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.



Howard Buchanan

W. Howard Buchanan, 79, of Lee Bumgarner Road, Sylva, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, in Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Rich Peoples and James Lambert officiated. Burial was in the East Fork Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jan Buchanan, Loy Deitz, Clayton Deitz, Derrick Killian, Don Killian and Ken Murray. Honorary pallbearers were James Barnwell, Paul Buchanan, Boyce Deitz, Keith Derrickson, Ron Gass, Odell Haskett, Earnest Jamison Jr., David Montieth, Johnny Robinson Jr., Raymond Stovall, Jim Ward and Milas Ward.

A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he was manager of Erwin Plumbing and retired from Ward Plumbing and Heating. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church, where he was a former chairman of deacons, member of the choir and former choir director. He sang tenor with the quartet Melody Five and was a member and former president of the Sylva Lions Club. He was a son of the late Sam and Mary Hooper Buchanan.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; two brothers, Ossie and Roy; and one sister, Anna Lee Buchanan Murray.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Deitz Buchanan; two daughters, Sylvia Buchanan and Deborah Killian, both of Charlotte; one brother, Frank Buchanan of Sylva; and two grandchildren.

Dinah Welch

Dinah Calhoun Welch, 91, of the Big Cove community, Cherokee, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Tsali Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, at the residence of Walker Calhoun. The Revs. James "Bo" Parris and Cody Lambert officiated. Burial was in the family cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a craftworker, homemaker and wife of the late Frank Welch. She was the daughter of the late Morgan and Sallie Lossiah Calhoun.

She was preceded in death by three daughters, Sarah and Pauline Welch and Elizabeth Reagan, and two sons, Henderson and Edwin Welch.

Surviving are one brother, Walker Calhoun of Cherokee; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Hazel Painter

Hazel Irene Painter, 82, Sylva, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 18, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Ron Allen officiated.

A native of Wolcott, N.Y., and resident of Jackson County since 1992, she was a homemaker. She was the wife of 60 years to the late John Painter, who died in 1999.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Sherman.

Surviving are two daughters, Joy Rushnell of Clarkesville, Ga., and Cindy Ramsey of Sylva; three sisters, Nathalie Johnson of Melbourne, Fla., Beverly Clum of Webster, N.Y., and Marguerite Galloway of Zephyrhills, Fla.; one brother, Burton Sherman of Palmyra, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren.

Billy Murphy

Billy Clyde Murphy, 50, of Cherokee, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at Mountain View Manor Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Bethabara Baptist Church. The Revs. Mitchell Smiley and Bobby Watts officiated. Burial was at Birdtown Cemetery.

A native of Buncombe County and a lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a member of Bethabara Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Robert and Edna Murphy.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Ray Murphy, and one sister, Anna Lee Laws. Surviving are one brother, Les Murphy of Cherokee; and one sister, Judy Murphy Myers of Cherokee. Bill Moody Funeral Home in Bryson City was in charge of arrangements.

Jimmy Childers

Jimmy Childers, 76, of Crimson Drive, Whittier, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, unexpectedly after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Whittier Church of God, which he attended. The Revs. Ned Pressley, Larry Nations and Cody Lambert officiated. Burial was in the Union Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Thad Lackey VFW Post 8013. Pallbearers were Lyle Passmore, Charles Hartline, Charles Nations, Eugene Jones, Bobby Reagan and Shannon Price. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Qualla Volunteer Fire Department and Thad Lackey VFW Post 8013.

A native of Swain County, he lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was chaplain of the Thad Lackey VFW Post 8013 and founder and former chief of the Qualla Volunteer Fire Department. He was a son of the late Wilburn Grady and Lola Styles Childers.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Annie Childers; one daughter, Wanda Childers of Whittier; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Richard Beauchemin

Richard R. Beauchemin Sr., 71, of Salem, S.C., formerly of Winooski, Vt., died Saturday, March 16, 2002, in Sylva following a long illness.

Mass was held on Wednesday, March 20, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winooski. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Memorial services will follow in Sylva at a date to be announced.

A native of Winooski, he was a son of the late Louis and Irene Gamelin Beauchemin. He received his bachelor of arts degree from St. Michael's College in Winooski Park, Vt., in 1953 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore in 1957.

He was a practicing attorney in Maryland for 30 years, partner in the firm of Arnold, Beauchemin and Tingle for 27 years. He was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in Winooski, St. Matthew's Church in Baltimore, St. Paul the Apostle Church in Seneca, S.C., and St. Mary's Church in Sylva. He was an aide to Sen. George Aiken (R-Vt.) from 1953-58. In 1976, he was admitted and qualified as attorney and counselor in the 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. In 1986, he was admitted as attorney and counselor to the U.S. Supreme Court. He was past president of the Maryland Trial Lawyers Association.

He was a member of the Lion's Club in Salem, S.C. from 1994-96, was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus since 1952 and served as a volunteer Ad Litem in 1996.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Lorraine Beauchemin; four daughters, Cherie Hiner of Sacramento, Calif., Michelle Hurney of Clarksburg, Md., Monique Gibson of Abingdon, Md., and Giselle McDonough of Parville, Md.; five sons, Richard Beauchemin Jr. of Sylva, Daniel Beauchemin of Bel Air, Md., Louis Beauchemin II of Whitehall, Md., Bernard Beauchemin of Baltimore and Joseph Beauchemin of Salem; four sisters, Pauline Ducie of Schenectady, N.Y., Cecile Larocque of Swanton, Vt., Marie Vasseur of Monroe, N.Y., and Gloria Carpenter of Albany, N.Y.; two brothers, Raymond Beauchemin of Essex Jct., Vt., and Paul Beauchemin of Guilderland, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Xavier Church, 3 St. Peter Street, Winooski, Vt. 05404.

Myrtle Hensley

Myrtle Patterson Hensley, 65, of Michael Street, Gastonia, formerly of Sylva, died Monday, March 18, 2002, in Brian Center in Gastonia after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Locust Field Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Charles Carnes will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services. A native of Jackson County, she lived in Gastonia for the past 47 years. She was a daughter of the late Pat and Rachel Brown Patterson.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, George W. Hensley; two daughters, Branda Kay Martin of Dallas and Phyllis Hensley of the home; one son, William Patrick Hensley of Gastonia; two sisters, Jo Mann of Franklin and Jackie Dillard of Sylva; two brothers, Bill Patterson of Dillsboro and Tommy Patterson of Columbia, S.C.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.



Jack Buchanan

David "Jack" Buchanan, 79, of the Addie community, Sylva, died unexpectedly Monday, March 18, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) at New Hope Baptist Church. The Revs. Mike Moore, Eddie Stillwell, Earl Holden and Clemmey Queen will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Roy Glenn and Vanarah Tatham Buchanan. He retired as night watchman of Buster Brown and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he was usher and attended Sunday school for 56 years without missing.

Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Lucille Woodard Buchanan; four brothers, Roy Glenn Buchanan of Glendale, Md., Herbert Tyler Buchanan of Canton, Julian M. Buchanan of Bethel and Wilburn C. Buchanan of Candler; and one sister, Louise Stephens of Waynesville.
