Ensley Ensley

Lee Ensley Sr.

Lee Edward Ensley Sr., 84, of Stephens Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at New Hope Baptist Church. The Revs. Mike Moore, Earl Holden and John Reid officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronnie Bryson, Jack Buchanan, Bobby Nicholson, Don Shular, Pryde Farmer, Walter Young, Arnold Brooks, Donald Morrison and Clemey Queen.

He was born Feb. 23, 1917, in Jackson County to late Eular and Ellen Mills Ensley. He was a lifelong resident of Jackson County and retired from Mead Corp. as a shift supervisor with 32 years of service.

A member of New Hope Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and chairman of the board of deacons. and was a long-time Sunday school director and teacher of the adult class. He also held several positions in the Tuckaseegee Baptist Association, was a member of Woodmen of the World and served on the Jackson County Board of Elections for many years, being active in the Republican Party.

He was preceded in death by one grandson.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Betty Blanton Ensley; four sons, Harold Edward Ensley of Greeneville, Tenn., Hal Lee Ensley of Sylva, Haven Richard Ensley of Webster and Lee Edward Ensley Jr. of Waynesville; two sisters, Janie Parris of Sylva and Gertrude Nicholson of Sedro Wooley, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Martha Driver

Martha George Driver, 67, of Cherokee's Wolftown community, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Macedonia Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Jim Parks and Arthur Locust officiated. Burial was in Manley George Family Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, she worked at The Cherokee's and was a daughter of the late Manley and Savannah Partridge George.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Luke and Columbus George, and one sister, Addie Littlejohn.

Surviving are two daughters, Martha French and Sherry Jones, both of Swannanoa; one son, William J. Jones of Cherokee; two sisters, Betty Leigh George and Rachel Morgan, both of Whittier; one brother, Abraham George of Whittier; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Elba Buchanan

Elba B. Buchanan, 95, of Sylva's Greens Creek community, died after a period of declining health Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center, where she spent her last two weeks.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Old Savannah Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Clifford Parker and David Souders officiated. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery. Pallbearers were Randy Cabe, Jimmy James, Mike Moore, Ray Crawford, Greg Crawford and Eric Buchanan.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Peggy Cunningham Brooks.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Harley Buchanan, who died in 1943; one son, Floyd Ray Buchanan, who was killed in Holland during World War II; two brothers, Adam and Allen Brooks; and one grandson.

Surviving are five daughters, Azilee Buchanan of Marietta, Ga., Annie Dee Harmon of Franklin, Elizabeth "Maggie" Cabe, Mary Moore and Roberta B. Crawford, all of Sylva; one son, George C. Buchanan of Blairsville, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Lola Queen

Lola Cordelia McCoy Queen, 82, of Cherokee, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Bethabara Baptist Church. The Rev. James "Bo" Parris officiated. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery. She was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chub McCoy; three sisters, Olive Welch, Helen Nations and Edith Dowdle; four brothers, Tom, Russell, Frank and Henry McCoy; and one infant daughter, Luella.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, the Rev. Soloman Queen; one daughter, Edith "Midge" Maney of Cherokee; four sons, Verlon and Carl McCoy and David and Ricky Queen; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City, was in charge of arrangements.



Robert Gasaway

Robert Ray Gasaway, 67, of High Point, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at a High Point hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home, Bryson City. The Rev. Chris Rumfelt will officiate. Burial will be at Swain Memorial Park. The family was to have received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the funeral home.

A native of Swain County, he was a 1953 graduate of Nantahala High School, served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958 and was a retired postal worker with 30 years service.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Susie Douthit Gasaway of the home; one son, Steve Gasaway of High Point; one daughter, Nancy Gasaway of Boston; and one sister, Betty Hartsell of Pitts Town, N.J.

Lewis Woods

Lewis Richmond Woods, 64, died Feb. 11, 2002, in Lilburn, Ga., from cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at First Presbyterian Church of Sylva.

Born in Highlands on Aug. 29, 1938, he was the son of Charles and Stella Woods. He attended various schools while growing up in the Western North Carolina/North Georgia mountains, as his father was a logger in the area.

During his senior year of high school, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Salina, Kan., at Schillings Air Force Base, where he met his first wife of 37 years, Vivian Ripple.

After his discharge from the service, he moved to Kansas City where he joined Phillips Petroleum Co. He moved to their corporate headquarters in Bartlesville, Okla., as a system analyst in the data processing center.

After 19 years with the company, he moved to Atlanta to become a vice president at National Data Corp. in the Arco Division, in charge of data processing. Two years later, in 1982 he left NDC and opened his own business, Lewis Data Systems Inc., a data processing firm, serving as its owner/president until November. He was a pit crew chief for a team that raced super-modified and sprint cars.

Surviving are his wife of six years, Billie Denton; one daughter, Leslie Woods Carlson of San Clemente, Calif.; three brothers, Thad and Wendell "Bucky" Woods, both of Waynesville, and Barry Woods of Sylva; three sisters, Brenda Mills of Waynesville and Linda Brown and Belva Shuler, both of Sylva.

Janice Killian

Janice R. Killian, 54, of Bryson City, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Mountain View Manor Nursing Center.

Visitation and funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. David Russell officiated.

A native of Swain County and daughter of the late Clarence Ting Rogers and Alta M. Johnson, she was a member of Yellowhill Baptist Church and a homemaker.

She was proceded in death by one brother, Harold Welch Tramper; one sister, Jean Elizabeth Johnson; and stepmother, Nellie R. Rogers.

Surviving are her husband of 16 years, Charles E. Killian; two sons, Joseph L. White of Jacksonville, Fla., and Christopher Allen White of Cherokee; two daughters, Shannon Deann White of Bryson City and Sonya Michelle Carey of Sylva; three brothers, Will Tramper and Daniel Johnson, both of Cherokee, and George Johnson of Sylva; three sisters, Sally Tramper and Loretta Bolden of Cherokee and Darlene Nesbitt of Granger, Utah; three stepbrothers, Ab Rogers, Denny Rogers and Butch Goings, all of Cherokee; one step-sister, Susie Welch of Cherokee; and seven grandchildren.



Deborah Simpson

Deborah Jean Simpson, 60, of Ripple Run, Sylva, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at her residence.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Feb. 17, in Kaufman, Texas. Visitation was at noon Thursday, Feb. 14, at Moody Funeral Home in Sylva.

A native of Kaufman, Texas, she lived in Sylva the past two and a half years. She was employed at Western Carolina University as an administrative assistant. She was the daughter of the late James Hilton and Mildred Thomas Squires.

Surviving are one son, David Russell Simpson of Blanchard, Okla.; two brothers, John Squires of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Bill Squires of Gambrills, Md.; and one granddaughter.

Thomas Lambert

The Rev. Thomas H. Lambert, 73, of Adams Creek Road, Cherokee, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in Cherokee hospital following an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Echota Baptist Church. The Revs. James "Bo" Parris and Dan Lambert officiated. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a member of Echota Baptist Church and pastor for 36 years. He also pastored Waterfall Baptist Church for two years.

He was a member of tribal council for four years, representing Birdtown community. A former officer with the Cherokee Police Department, he retired from The Cherokee's Manufacturing.

He was a son of the late Herman and Amanda George Lambert.

He was preceded in death by one son, Mark Tyron Lambert; two brothers, Leslie Lambert and Michael Lambert; and one sister, Geraldine Lambert.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Marilyn Goforth Lambert; three sons, James Henry Lambert, Thomas Leslie Lambert and John Carson Lambert, all of Cherokee; three daughters, Florence Lorene Bradley, Mia Faye Lambert and Deborah Littlejohn, all of Cherokee; two brothers, David Lambert and Ronald Lambert, both of Cherokee; one sister, Mary Hazel Lambert of Cherokee; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

David Green

David Judson Green, 75, of Darrington, Wash., died Jan. 30, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 1 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Mountain View Baptist Church in Darrington, Wash. The Rev. Billy Elders officiated.

He was born on Feb. 13, 1926, in Whittier to Roy S. and Maggie F. Greene, the fourth of 15 children.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II until he was honorably discharged in 1946 after two years of service. In 1948, he and his family moved to Darrington, Wash., where he helped construct Darrington Mountain View Baptist Church and became one of its first ordained deacons.

He took a job with the U.S. Forest Service in Darrington, working with Harold Engles. Following that, he owned and operated Whitehorse Shake Mill until he sold it in 1956. He then went to work at the Darrington Shingle Mill until retiring in 1986 due to ill health.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Gentry Green.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Margaret Brooks Green; two daughters, Barbara Kyalin of Darrington, Wash., and Martha Jones of Sedro Wooley, Wash.; two sons, Kenneth Green and David Green, both of Darrington, Wash.; three brothers, Felix Greene, Neil Greene and Buford Greene, all of Darrington, Wash.; eight sisters, Ruby Rayfield of Dallas, Eva Gates of Whittier, Evelyn Beam of Everett, Wash., Eula Brooks of Sylva, Beulah Littrell of Arlington, Wash., Kathy Gunter of Yakima, Wash., Pauline Jones of Darrington, Wash., and Jheri Wood of Sylva.



Mary Fox

Mary Love Fox, 83, of Chipper Curve Road, Sylva, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Earl Holden officiated. Burial was in Cogdill-Henry Cemetery in Balsam.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and had worked for the Jackson County School System and Skyland Care Center.

She was the daughter of the late George Lee and Mary Henry Cogdill and wife of the late Burley Fox.

She was preceded in death by one son, Randall Fox.

Surviving are one son, Tom Fox of Marietta, Ga.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Lillian Milburn

Lillian Margaret Milburn, 95, of 99 Cabin Flats Road, Balsam, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, at Skyland Care Center.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the chapel of Whitham-Kanapaux Funeral Home in Rockaway, N.J. Burial was at Rockaway Valley Cemetery.

Born in Morris County, N.J., she was the daughter of the late James and Nancy Jane Sims Taylor. She was employed as a presser for McGregors Sportsware Clothing Manufacturing Co.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Francis Taylor; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters, Mabel Russell of Balsam and Arlene Olivo of Dover, N.J.; one son, Ralph Milburn of Boonton, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Lillie Stephenson

Lillie Belle McMahan Johnson Stephenson, 97, of Bryson City's Alarka community, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Swain County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Mount Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Clegg will officiate. Burial will be in Sawmill Hill Cemetery. The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Bill Moody Funeral Home in Bryson City.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a homemaker. She was a daughter of the late John and Easter Mason McMahan.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Fred Johnson and Ellis Stephenson.

Surviving are two sisters, Bertha Bumgarner of Bryson City and Alice Duncan of Charlotte.

Ed Bryson, SCC's founding president, dies at age 74

Edward E. Bryson, 74, of 194 Old County Home Road, Dobson, formerly a Jackson County resident, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Northern Hospital in Surry County.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Born in Macon County March 29, 1927, to Edward and Pearl Picklesimer Bryson, he was founding president of Southwestern Community College and served as its president for 17 years. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Ida Gentry Bryson: two daughters, Carolyn Bryson Johnson of Dobson and Joyce Bryson Schoer of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and five grandchildren.
