Jane GarnerS. Jane Bishop Garner, 77, of Hampton, Va., died at her home Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, after a short battle with cancer.Funeral services sere held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Central United Methodist Church. The Rev. John E. Conner officiated. Burial was in Parklawn Memorial Park. Born and raised in Cullowhee, she attended Western Carolina University before moving to the Peninsula area in 1943. She began working at the shipyard to "help win the war" for her brother, who was in the Army. |

She met and married Frank L. Garner Jr. in 1944. While raising her two children, she worked for Philip Levy Furniture Store and later Newport News Shipbuilding, where she retired from the label plate section in 1983, after 23 years of service.
She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the Progressive Class and the Central Singers. She bowled on leagues at Fort Monroe, Century and Spare Times. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Frank L. Garner Jr.; and four brothers, Edgar, Locke, Charlie and Robert Bishop. Surviving are one daughter, Sheila Haskard of Hampton, Va.; one son, Frank L. "Len" Garner III of Hampton, Va.; one sister, Irene Hooper of Cullowhee; two brothers, Ray Bishop of Morganton and Jesse Bishop of Tacoma, Wash.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Central Untied Methodist Church, 225 Chapel St., Hampton, Va. 23669. Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Bonnie DillardBonnie Parrish Dillard, 87, of Sylva, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, in a Swain County health care facility after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Paul Christy and Phyllis Glahn officiated. Burial followed in Franklin's Snow Hill Methodist Church Cemetery. A native of Macon County and a former resident of Bryson City, she was a member of Snow Hill Methodist Church and the owner and operator of Bonnie's Beauty Shop in Bryson City. She also worked in Tuckasegee Beauty Shop in Sylva. She was the daughter of the late Ed and Ethel Watkins Parrish and wife of the late Harold Dillard. Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Kimbrell of Sylva; one brother, Titus H. Parrish of Bradenton, Fla.; and one granddaughter. An online memorial and guest register is available at www.pemoody.com. Conner, 70, of Wilkesdale Street, Sylva, died unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at his residence.Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Hooper Cemetery in Speedwell community. Pallbearers were John Bryson, Johnny Bryson, Justin Jumper, Christopher Farmer, Robert Jumper and Shiera Liakh. A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he retired from Whitman's Bakery in Waynesville. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and was a son of the late Victor and Eva Ashe Conner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Conner. Surviving are one daughter, Donna Gayle of Whittier; one son, Mark Conner of Hendersonville; four sisters, Mildred Bryson of Sylva, Jean Davis of Sparta, Tenn., Doris Fallow of Indiana and Shila Blankenship of Illinois; one brother, Henry Conner of Whittier; and three grandchildren.
Conley NationsConley L. Nations, 85, of Whittier's Nations Creek community, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Brooks officiated. Burial was in Barkers Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Casey Jones, Roger Nations, Jake Dills, Charles McCoy, Matthew McCoy and Gene Nations. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Hennessee Lumber Co. He was the son of the late Albert and Lola Wyke Nations. He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Fay Messer Nations; two sons, Gorsie Nations and Delos Nations, both of Whittier; one granddaughter; two step-grandsons; and one step-great-grandson.
Myrtle CarterMyrtle Cabe Carter, 82, of Liberty Drive, Sylva, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Franklin Cemetery. Pallbearers were Larry Cabe, Sam Cabe, Eric Hester, Eugene Jones, Fred Shuler and Billy Ray Gunter. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the last surviving child of the late George and Minnie Gunter Cabe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Carter, who died in 1984. Surviving are one daughter, Linda Sue Bryson of Sylva; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jules HarrisJules Landon Harris, 37, of Dark Ridge Road, Balsam, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at his residence.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Johnny Swanger officiated. Burial was at Watkins Cemetery in Bryson City. Pallbearers were Steve Henry, Eddie Manor, Bill Sutton, Tim, Dwight and Fred Holbrooks. A native of Haywood County, he had lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was owner of Harris Tree and Landscaping, graduated from Sylva-Webster High School and attended New Covenant Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Landon Harris. Surviving are his wife of three years, Karen Francis Harris; his mother and stepfather, Louise Parks Bradley and Johnny Trull of Maggie Valley; three daughters, Jessica Hightower of Hazelwood, Sarah Harris and Hannah Harris, both of Franklin; one son, Justin Harris of the home; one stepson, Jonathan Hanby of Hickory; and two sisters, Rowena Harris of Maggie Valley and Mary Lene Harris of Waynesville.
Ernest BumgarnerErnest Ray Bumgarner, 61, of Marble Drive, Sylva, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at his residence after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Carl Adams and Johnny Norris officiated. Burial was in Balsam Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Ensley, JR Keefer, JR Ashe, John Frizzell, Kevin Guffey and Homer Ashe. Honorary pallbearers were Fred Cogdill, Gene Sutton, Albert Arrington, Gene Keefer, Ronnie Bryson, Lonie Monteith, Paul Frady, Chuck Keefer, Ray Ledford, Dee Mull, Ray Mills and Dan Bentley. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from the shipping department at Dayco. A son of the late Ernest and Bessie Lee Turner Bumgarner, he was a member of Pine Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one stepson, Stephen Kilby. Surviving are his wife of 13 years, Shirley Ashe Bumgarner; three daughters, Annetta Mull of Cullowhee, Teresa Bratcher of Andrew, S.C., and Revonda Corbin of Bridgeton; one stepdaughter, Pamela Brown of Sylva; two brothers, Joseph Bumgarner of Rock Hill, S.C., and Calvin Bumgarner of Gaffney, S.C.; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jessie EstesJessie Charles "J.C." Estes, 49, of Paradise Lane, Sylva, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at his residence after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Clifford Parker and David Souderes officiated. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery. Pallbearers were Alvin Hall, Tony and David Nichols, Brian Calls, James Hopkins and Jerry Conner. A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he was self-employed and a veteran of the Vietnam War. He attended Old Savannah Baptist Church and was a son of Mary Ellen Sutton Estes of Sylva and the late Charlie T. Estes. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Hattie Nolita Mathis Estes; one son, Jessie Paul Estes of Montavon, Ill.; three sisters, Sarah Elizabeth Lyons of Sylva, Joyce Pruitt of Wallace and Jean Lozano of Arlington, Texas; four brothers, Tom Estes of Princeton, Ill., Don Estes of Rack Falls, Ill., Mike Estes of Polo, Ill., and David Estes of Sylva; and one grandchild. Lorraine MartellLorraine M. Martell, 86, of 2083 Upper Ridge Road, Port Washington, Wisc., died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospice, Milwaukee.Memorial services will be held at 11 :30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Poole Funeral Home, 203 N. Wisconsin St., Port Washington, Wisc., 53074. The Reverend James Strupp will officiate. The family will receive friends after 11 a.m. She was born on Dec. 31, 1915, in Kewaunee, Wisc., to Arthur and GIadys Nelson Anderson. She graduated from Kewaunee High School and spent most of her time between Kewaunee and Sturgeon Bay, Wisc., with her father and grandfather in the U.S. Coast Guard. She attended the former Milwaukee State Teachers College before her marriage. On Nov. 20, 1937, she married Victor H. Martell of Sturgeon Bay, Wisc. During their marriage he operated Yule Truckline of Milwaukee until he retired and sold the business in 1978. Upon her husband's death in 1982, she lived in Cashiers with her daughter, Lynn Garrett, who was a business operator there and active in local politics. In 1991, she and her daughter moved to Port Washington. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Carol. Surviving are one daughter, Lynn Garrett of Port Washington, Wisc., one son L.V. "Rocky" Martell of Brookfield, Wisc.; one sister, Roma McGrath of Wonder Lake, Ill.; one brother Glen Anderson of Kenosha, Wisc.; seven grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Weaver StilesWeaver "Roger" Stiles, 82, of Springfield, Ore., died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Major Family Funeral Home. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery. A native of Dillsboro, he was a son of Hicks and Alice Rogers Stiles. He married Sue R. Orbanoski on April 20, 1951, in Vancouver, Wash. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany and Panama. He was a papermaker and worked for Weyerhaeuser Co. for 33 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Associated Western Pulp and Paper Workers Union. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Sheila Jean Albaugh of Centralia, Wash., and Georgianne M. Kingsbury of Boise, Idaho; three brothers, Thad Stiles and Ellis Stiles, both of Dillsboro, and Talmadge Stiles of Springfield; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Nason KinkaidNason E. Kinkaid, 101, of Amanda Lane, Sylva, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at his residence after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Rich Peoples officiated. Burial was in Old Field Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Kinkaid, Al Kinkaid Jr., David Hall, Tim Edgar, Rob Steenwyk and Tony Guerra. A native of Knoxville, Tenn., he had lived in Jackson County since 1961. He attended Daughon's Business College in Knoxville. He received a senior diploma for violin, pedagogy, harmony, theory and ear training at Chicago Musical College. He played many seasons in symphony, opera and concert with the Miami University Symphony, as well as the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra. He was a real estate agent/broker, land developer and general contractor. He was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church. He was the son of the late James Lawrence and Cora Mae Kinkaid and husband of the late Mary Annette Kinkaid. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Surviving are one daughter, Rachel K. Cagle of the home; one son, Alvin Kinkaid Sr. of Whittier; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren. A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Lee Houston and Birda Moss Houston of Stanley. He retired from Cashiers Plastic and was a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church, where he was custodian. He was preceded in death by one sister, Wanda Houston. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 26 years, Donna Corbin Houston; three daughters, Donna Lee Ball of Yellow Mountain, Mary Ann Houston Clayton of Belmont and Cathy Houston Teems of Stanley; three stepsons, Charles Anthony Norris of Cashiers, Tim Norris of Yellow Mountain and David Norris of Tuckaseegee; three sisters, Aileen Watson and Ann Clark, both of Stanley, and Eloise Clemmer of Apex; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Nations, 58, of Weeping Willow Lane, Whittier, died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at his residence.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Johnny Ray Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Nations Creek Cemetery. The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the funeral home. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Thurman and Beulah Davis Nations. He was a self-employed carpenter and a member of Wilmot Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Jarleen Carpenter. Surviving are one daughter, Angela Lovedahl of Waynesville; one son, Clay Nations of Greenville, S.C.; one sister, Fairie Lee Hensley of Dillsboro; and four grandchildren.
