Harris Harris

Gaston Harris

Gaston McKinley "Bear" Harris, 49, of Lincolnton, died Dec. 23, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

A native of Sylva, he was the son of the late Gaston and May bell Harris.

Surviving are one son, Kenny "Bugs" Harris of Lincolnton; two daughters, Becky Brooks of Iron Station and Pamela Crawley of Lincolnton; two brothers, John Harris of Waynesville and William Harris of Pickens, S.C.; two sisters, Joann Woodring of Sylva and Pat Harris of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two stepsons and one stepdaughter; and 19 grandchildren.


Monroe Wilson

Monroe Lester Wilson, 77, of Sylva's Savannah community, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Zion Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. Keith Ashe, Eddie Stillwell, Ernie Jamison, Eddie Deitz and Davis Hooper officiated.

Burial was in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Franklin VFW Post 7339, of which he was a member. Pallbearers were Darrell Woodard, Cale Wilson, Darren Buchanan, Foreman Bradley, Stacy Buchanan and Danny Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Buddy Buchanan, Raymond Sorrells, Ed Johnson, James Lee Buchanan and Kenneth Bishop.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Walter and Beulah Johnson Wilson.

He retired from the Jackson County school system in food service, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, of which he was a deacon, on the cemetery committee and a former Sunday school superintendent. He was a member of the Farm Bureau board of directors for more than 25 years.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Dexter Pressley, and two sisters, Irene Franks and Viola Franks. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Jessie S. Wilson; two sons, Terry Monroe Wilson and Stephen M. Wilson, both of Sylva; a twin sister, Margaret Hester Franks of Franklin; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Zion Hill Cemetery Fund.

Linda Fugate

Linda Gail Painter Fugate, 46, of Chattooga Woods Road, Cashiers, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Cashiers Church of God, of which she attended. The Revs. Johnny Norris and Larry Hemphill officiated. Burial was in Upper Zachary Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of William Carl "Red" Painter of Sylva and the late Sarah Lou Cagle Painter, who died December 2001. She was the assistant director for the Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving, in addition to her father, are her husband, Kelvin W. Fugate; one daughter, Brittany Gordon of the home; one son, Josh Gordon of the home; and one brother, David Painter Sr. of Sylva.

John Robinson

John Albert Robinson, 88, of Harris Circle, Sylva, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Rich Peoples officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Mead Corp. with 42 years of service and was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nova Harris Robinson, who died in 1997, and one brother, Bill Robinson.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary R. Walker of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one son, James Robert Robinson of Charlotte; one sister, Betty Borders of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.



Randy Taylor

Randy Taylor, 45, of 247 Meeting House Cove Road, Cherokee, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in Vineland, N.J.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, in Smith Family Cemetery.

A native of Cherokee and a former resident of Golden, Colo., he was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Cherokee. He worked as a framer in the construction industry and had formerly worked in automotive body repair. He was a son of the late Richard Taylor.

Surviving are his mother, Betty Taylor; and four brothers, Ken, John, Bill and Ronald Taylor, all of Cherokee.

Francis Wagner

Francis Werty Wagner, 58, of Camp Creek Road, Whittier, died Dec. 24, 2001, at Mountain View Manor Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

No services are planned.

Joseph Davis

Joseph Davis of Joe Davis Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Emerson Sequoyah

Emerson Sequoyah, 74, of Cherokee's Big Cove community, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, in Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Straight Fork Baptist Church. The Revs. James "Bo" Parris and Bobby Watts officiated. Burial was in Sequoyah Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were Emerson Sequoyah Welch, Bryan Tramper, Sam Toineeta, Rodney Johnson, Steve Arkansas, Jeff Girty, Edd Owle and Joe Grimmett.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he retired as a nursing assistant from Cherokee Indian Hospital. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea.

He was the son of the late Lizzie Watty and Lloyd "Runningwolf" Sequoyah.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Sequoyah Hill; and two sisters, Stacy Queen and Lucy Driver.

Surviving are seven daughters, Patricia Sequoyah Tramper, Annette Sequoyah Corral, Charlene Lossiah, Cynthia "Stinker" Sequoyah, Imelda Sequoyah, Sharon Owle and Beth Johnson; two sons, Buddy Johnson and Lou Johnson; one brother, Johnson Sequoyah; two sisters, Ida S. Wolfe and Rosie Hornbuckle; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

James Catolster

James Carson Catolster, 55, of 293 Lucy Long Road, Cherokee, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, in Cherokee Indian Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at Yellow Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. James "Red" Bradley and Roland Whitaker officiated. Burial was at Yellow Hill Veterans Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the U.S. Army. He was former commander of the Tsalagi Warriors.

Survivors are his wife, Faith Ann Catolster; two brothers, Sam Catolster of Macon, Ga., and Tim Catolster of Cherokee; and two sisters, Phyllis Martinez and Sally Sampson, both of Cherokee.

Joyce Smith

Joyce Young Smith, 53, of 133 Windy Hill Lane, Canton, died unexpectedly at her residence Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home. The Revs. Dr. Frank Harvey and Dr. Charles B. Sojack officiated. Burial was at Shook Cemetery in Jackson County. Pallbearers were Marty Ledford, Shane Shuler, Jeff Sutton, Ben Sutton, Carroll and Darrell Young.

A native of Jackson County, she lived most of her life in Haywood County. She was the daughter of Nora Lee Young and the late Charlie H. Young and Doris Kepley.

She was part of a husband-and-wife truck-driving team for the past 20 years and was employed by Ryder Logistics of Fletcher.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Ray; and two sisters, Linda Ray and Donna Woodring.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband of 33 years, Larry Smith; three sisters, Jean Carpenter of Rock Hill, S.C., Nancy Ray of Canton and Marie Sutton of Waynesville; and one brother, Phillip Ray of Rock Hill.

Katherine Martin

Katherine Francis Rodgers Martin, 91, of Crowley, Texas, formerly of Sylva, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, in a Crowley Care Center.

A funeral mass will be conducted by Father James Cahill at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sylva. Burial will follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of New York City and former resident of Alton, N.H., she was a graduate of the Shepard-Gill School of Nursing in Boston. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Nora Farell Lynch and wife of the late John B. Martin.

Lucy Stacey

Lucy Evelyn Stephens Stacey, 93, of Cullowhee, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in Skyland Care Center after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Revs. G.D. Phillips, Steve Bialy and Timothy Rall will officiate. Burial will be in Old Mother Cemetery in Robbinsville. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

A native of Bloomfield, Mo., she had lived in Jackson County for the past two years. She was the daughter of the late Matt and Melinda Jane Stephens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Stacey.

Surviving are one daughter, Beverly Colvard of Sylva; three sons, Delvis Stacey of Williston, Fla., Joe Stacey of Cullowhee and Robert Lee Stacey of Rose City, Mich.; three brothers, Joe Stephens of Cape Girardean, Mo., Harvey Stephens of Advance, Mo., and Charles Stephens of Bloomfield., Mo.; 23 grandchildren; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.



William Kilpatrick

William "Bill" Kilpatrick of Old Dillsboro Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, in Memorial Mission Hospital.
