Sidney Sutton

Sidney Allen Sutton, 75, of Crescent City, Calif., died Oct. 26, 2003,
at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City of respiratory failure.
No services were held. His ashes will be scattered at sea at a later
date.
He was born July 31, 1928, in Jackson County and was raised in the Sutton
Branch community.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a heavy equipment operator in the
Army Corps of Engineers in Korea during the Korean conflict. Following
his service in the Army he moved to California.
He lived in the Brookings, Ore., area for more than 20 years. He worked
in the area and eventually retired from Tidewater Construction as a
heavy equipment operator in 2001.

James Rogers
James A. "Ab" Rogers, 56, of Cherokee's Owl Branch community,
died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at the residence
on Owl Branch Road. The Rev. Merritt Youngdeer officiated. Burial followed
in the family cemetery with military graveside services conducted by
the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post and the Tsa-la-gi Warriors.
He was a son of the late Clarence "Ting" and Nell Reed Rogers.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and received numerous medals. He
was also a member of the Tsa-la-gi Warriors, a pipemaker and craftsman.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Janice Rogers Killian.
Surviving are his wife, Stacy Bird Rogers; one son, Brian Allen Rogers
of Cherokee; one daughter, Tara Rogers of Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers,
Butch Goings and Dennis Rogers, both of Cherokee; one sister, Sue Welch
of Cherokee, and five grandchildren.

Janice Gay
Janice A. Gay, 66, of Pioneer Trail Road, Franklin, died Sunday, Jan.
4, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Shepherd
of the Hills Lutheran Church. The Rev. Timothy Rall will officiate.
Private burial will be held at a later date.
A native of Chicago, she had lived in Macon County for the past 4 1/2
years. She was an accountant for Pan Am Airlines and was a flight attendant
for Delta Airlines. Daughter of the late Arthur and Helen Hornburg,
she was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
Surviving are her husband of 21 years, Leonard P. Gay; one daughter,
Pamela Theummler of Ocean Side, Calif.; one son, Kurt Theummler of West
Palm Beach, Fla.; one sister, Nita Mecum of Sarasota, Fla.; one brother,
Arthur Hornburg Jr. of Chicago; and five grandchildren.

Barbara Wood
Barbara H. Wood, 58, of 2305 Abbey Circle, Asheville, died unexpectedly
Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, in the chapel of
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Ed Powell officiated. Burial
was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
A native of Jackson County, she graduated from McKee Laboratory School.
While a student in high school, she worked in Brown Cafeteria. She continued
her education at Western Carolina University and completed a bachelor's
degree in speech and hearing, while working full time at Dayco Southern.
She later completed a master's degree in speech communications through
Auburn University and WCU.
She first worked as a speech therapist for Haywood County schools and
later at Tallassee, Ala., schools. For the past 22 years, she was employed
by Buncombe County schools as a speech pathologist, primarily at Haw
Creek School.
She was preceded in death by her father, J.R. Haskett.
Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Mae and Alvin Middleton of
Tuckasegee; one daughter, Melanie Shook of Asheville; one sister, Brenda
Buchanan of Tuckasegee; one brother, Ronald Haskett of Mills River;
and one granddaughter.

Bessie Ridley
Bessie B. Ridley, 89, of Cashiers, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Harris
Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Norton
Community Cemetery in Cullowhee. The Rev. Johnny Norris will officiate.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday,
Jan. 7, at Moody Funeral Home.
A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late James Baxter
and Florence C. Ridley.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.

Asbury Carden
Arthur Asbury Carden, 86, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003,
at Harris Regional Hospital following a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at First United
Methodist Church. The Revs. Paul Christy and Phyllis Glahn officiated.
Burial followed in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
He was born Nov. 12, 1917, to Samuels Arthur and Agnes Pruitt Carden.
He graduated from Sylva Central High School in 1935.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as a chief mechanics
mate on the USS Yorktown during World War II, receiving an honorable
discharge in 1945.
For 31 years, he was employed by the U. S. Postal Service as a rural
mail carrier.
He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Sylva,
where he served as Sunday school superintendent and chairman of the
board of trustees, and served as a lay delegate to the annual conference
at Lake Junaluska. He was a lifetime member of the United Methodist
men and was instrumental in the construction of the church's educational
building, with the fellowship hall being named in his honor.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mildred Brendle Carden.
Surviving are two daughters, Lou Ann Carden of Sylva, and Kay Babecki
of Macon, Ga.; one son, John Carden of Candler; an adopted brother,
Gary Carden of Sylva; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Clara Steward
Clara N. Steward, 83, of Whittier's Qualla community died Tuesday,
Dec. 30, 2003, in a Swain County health care facility.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, in the chapel
of Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City. The Rev. Clifford Willis officiated.
Burial was in Campground Cemetery.
A native of Indiana, she lived in Jackson County for the past 40 years.
She was a member of the Eastern Star in Bryson City and Whittier Baptist
Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Martin Steward; and one
sister, Ruby Sewell.
Surviving are two sons, Nicholas Steward and John Michael Steward, both
of Whittier; one sister, Dorothy Chastain of Austin, Ind.; one brother,
Fred Nicholas of Ramsey, Ind.; and three grandchildren.

Holden York
Holden Cecil York, 76, of 20 Orchard St., Canton, died Tuesday, Dec.
30, 2003, at Skyland Care Center.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, in the chapel
of Crawford/Ray Funeral Home in Canton.
Entombment was in The Horizon at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.
A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late James and Sarah
Lindsey York. He retired from Champion International with 31 years of
service. He was a Champion Oldtimer and a member of Full Gospel Holiness
Church in Canton.
Surviving are three daughters, Marquetta, Denise and Karen; six sisters,
Lassie Woody of Asheville, Marilyn Woody of Durham, Zell Yarborough
of Lexington and Antha Elders, Virgie York and Rachel Smith, all of
Bryson City; and five grandchildren.

Athur Denton
Arthur Ray Denton, 75 of 290 Candlelight Circle, Canton, died Sunday,
Dec. 28, 2003, at the Asheville VA Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Long's United
Methodist Church. The Revs. Shelly Webb, Brad Holliman and Tom Gable
officiated. Burial was in Long's United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Military graveside rites were conducted by the U. S. Army Honor Guard
of Fort Bragg. Pallbearers were Benny Young, Gary Ridenour, Benny Williams,
Steve Kinsland, Kenneth Blalock, Joe Valliere, Stephen Valliere and
Mickey O'Neal.
A native of Swain County, he was a son of the late Sam and Etta Gibson
Denton. He lived most of his life in Haywood County, was a former employee
of Champion International and was the owner and operator of Denton Heating
Service. He was a U. S. Army veteran, having served in North Africa
and France. He was a member of Long's United Methodist Church, where
he was a member of the choir and a MYF counselor.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Frances Blalock Denton; two brothers,
Sam Denton Jr. of Duarte, Calif., and Jim Denton of Canton; and one
sister, Nellie Dunlap of Whittier.

Charles Hyatt

Charles Earl Hyatt Jr., 71, of 4 Water St., Apt. B, Asheville, died
Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Brown Temple
CME Church. The Rev. Gary McDaniel officiated. Burial was in Violet
Hill Cemetery.
A native of Sylva, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Hattie Mae
Fisher Hyatt Sr. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and
received the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service
Medal, Korean Service Medal and a Bronze Star. He was employed for several
years at Parkland Chevrolet and was the owner of Family Limousine Service.
His community activities included membership in several social clubs
and coach of the Erskine Street Softball team.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronnie Hyatt and Pete Bryson;
one sister, Maggie Bell Smith; two sons, Gary Lee and Douglas "Pig"
Sheldon Bryson, and one grandson.
Surviving are two sons, Gary Maewether and Tommy Littlejohn of Asheville;
six daughters, Darrell "Dee" Robertson, Stephanie Maewether,
Regina Littlejohn, Charlesetta Fletcher and Janice Hyatt, all of Asheville
and Robyn Powell of Sylva; one sister, Charlene Hyatt of Detroit; 20
grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Shirlene George
Shirlene Jessan George, 57, of Cherokee's Yellowhill community, died
Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, in Tsali Care Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Big Cove
Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. James "Bo"
Parris officiated. Burial was in the Drama Cemetery.
She was a daughter of Annie Arch Jessan of Cherokee and the late Sim
Jessan.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are one son, Eddie George of Cherokee;
two daughters, Gale George of Cherokee and Suzanna George Morgan of
Bryson City; three sisters, Eleanor George of California, Millie Queen
of Cherokee and Lillian Thompson of Cherokee; and three grandchildren.

Bonnie Gunter
Bonnie Lou Morris Gunter, 92, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003,
in a Sylva care center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, in the chapel of
Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Dean officiated. Burial was in
Upper Stephens Cemetery.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a graduate
of Sylva High School. She never missed a day of school in 11 years.
Daughter of the late John C. and Mattie Coward Morris, she was a member
of East Sylva Baptist Church.
She was married to Jack Gunter Sr., who died in 1994.
Surviving are four sons, Jack Gunter Jr. of Pisgah Forest, Ronnie and
Jerry Gunter of Brevard and L.H. Gunter of Sylva; nine grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren.

Mary Bradley
Mary Edith "Edie" Jackson Bradley, 72, of Cherokee's Wolfetown
community died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, in a Buncombe County hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Acquoni
Baptist Church. The Rev. Jim Parks and Ray Kinsland will officiate.
Burial will be in Bradley Family Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter
of the late Jack C. and Mary Queen Jackson. She was a member of Acquoni
Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. She retired from Cherokee
Elementary School as a truant officer and had recently worked at Hampton
Inn as a breakfast hostess.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Richard Bradley Sr.;
two sisters, Omie Kanott and Mackie Abran; and four brothers, Walter
Jackson, Johnny Jackson, Boyd Jackson and Jack Jackson.
Surviving are two sons, John R. Bradley and Larry Edward Bradley, both
of Cherokee; one daughter, Debbie Bradley of Cherokee; three sisters,
Sadie Jackson and Barbara Robie, both of Cherokee, and Lawanda Jean
Bryant of Landson, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Nora Robinson
Nora Joyce Robinson, 63, of Columbia, S.C., formerly of Jackson County,
died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital after an
extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Melton-Riddle
Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Earl Holden officiated. Burial was in
Addie Cemetery. Pallbearers were William, Kenneth, Tommy, Jeff and Adam
Crawford and Tony Burris.
A native of Jackson County, she had lived the past two years in Columbia.
She worked at Buster Brown and was a member of Buff Creek Baptist Church.
She was a daughter of Edna Mae Hoyle Crawford of Sylva and the late
Grady Monroe Crawford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Robinson, who died
in 1989; and one sister, Margaret Jeanette Allison.
Surviving are one daughter, Janet Stuckey of West Columbia, S.C.; one
son, Eric Robinson of Sylva; one sister, Wanda Crawford of Cullowhee;
five brothers, William Monroe Crawford, James Carroll Crawford, Paul
Edward Crawford, Kenneth Dale Crawford, all of Asheville, and Thomas
Grady of Sylva; and two grandchildren.

Robert Willis
Robert Allen Willis, 86, of Webster, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, at Fairview Memorial
Gardens. The Revs. Paul Christy and Phyllis Glahn officiated.
Formerly of Jackson County, Fla., he had lived in the Webster community
for the past 22 years. He was a graduate of The Citadel and had served
in the U.S. Army during World War II, achieving the rank of Major. He
was a retired cattleman and farmer, a member of the American Quarter
Horse Association and the Angus Association in Florida, where he served
as the association's president. Son of the late Robert Allen and Ida
Willis, he was a member of Sylva First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ray Britt Willis; one daughter, Anne Hudson
of Peachtree City, Ga.; one son, Robert Allen Willis III of Port St.
Joe, Fla.; one sister, Bethea Willis Patterson of Morehead City; four
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Eric Schreiber
Eric C. Schreiber, 55, of Whittier, died at his home Saturday, Dec.
20, 2003.
Graveside services were held Sunday, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m. at Thomas Memorial
Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Sylva American Legion
Post 104. The Rev. Tommy Ashe officiated.
Born in Hillsdale, Mich., he had lived in Whittier since 1995.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Geneva Schreiber.
Surviving are three daughters, Kim Murphy and Deanna Leibrandt of Carol
Stream, Ill., and Amy Hutton of Eugene, Ore.; one sister, Olivia McDaniel
of Gastonia; and seven grandchildren.

Mary Wilson

Mary Azalee Wilson, 72, of Hendersonville, formerly of Cullowhee's
Speedwell community, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Pardee Memorial
Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Melton-Riddle
Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tina Evans officiated. Burial was in Wilson
Cemetery in the Speedwell community.
A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Cleve and
Lela Trantham Wilson. She was a member of First United Methodist Church
of Charlotte.
A graduate of Cullowhee High School, she was class valedictorian. She
received several awards in high school and attended Girls State in Raleigh.
She was a graduate of Berea (Ky.) College with a degree in French. She
received grants to study French at McGill University, Montreal, Canada,
Middlebury (Vt.) College and Emory University in Atlanta. She taught
French, Spanish and English in Robbinsville, Mooresville, Atlanta, and
Charlotte Mecklenburg high schools, retiring in 1989. She made three
trips to France and other European countries.
Surviving are one sister, Elease Landreth of Etowah; and two brothers,
Granville Wilson and R.O. Wilson, both of Cullowhee.

Deborah Cole
Deborah Phillips Cole, 46, of Glassey Rock Lane, Glenville, died Thursday,
Jan. 1, 2004, in Highlands-Cashiers Hospital after a short illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Hamburg Baptist
Church, of which she was a member.
The Rev. Matt Ledbetter officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
A native of Miami, Fla., she had lived in Jackson County for the past
30 years. She previously worked at Mountain Party Tents and Events.
Daughter of Herschel Eugene Phillips of Walhalla, S.C., and Annoinette
Misleh Phillips of Glenville.
Surviving, is addition to her parents, are one daughter, Theresa Michele
Keener of Glenville; two sons, Christopher Keener of Sylva and James
Eugene Cole of the home; one sister, Tina Phillips Hooper of Sylva;
and one granddaughter.

James Webb
James Clyde "Spider" Webb, 66, of Lake Toxaway, died Thursday,
Jan. 1, 2004.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Moody-Connolly
Funeral Home. The Revs. Vess McCall and Jackie Hensley officiated.
A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Arthur and Elsie
Bryson Webb. He had lived in Lake Toxaway for 38 years and retired with
39 years services with the N.C. Department of Transportation. He was
a member of Faith Baptist Church and the Quebec Seniors and served in
the U.S. Air Force.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Griffin.
Surviving are his wife, Anne Middleton Webb; one son, David Webb of
Cashiers; three daughters, Sharon Bradley, Shirley Meece and Donna Webb,
all of Lake Toxaway; four sisters, Betty Joe Ward of Charlotte, Barbara
Jean Mauldon of Lake Lure, Anna Lou Nelon of Waynesville and Wanda McCall
of Lake Toxaway; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

John Childers

John B. Childers, 82, of Sylva died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, in Old Savannah
Baptist Church. The Revs. Dennis Burrell and Eddie Deitz officiated.
Burial followed in Old Savannah Cemetery.
He was the son of the late Robert and Ivory Buchanan Childers and the
last surviving member of his family. He was a veteran of World War II,
serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from Nantahala Power and Light
as a line crew foreman. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where
he served as a deacon.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jeanette Cabe Childers
who died in 1993; three sisters, Marie Frizzell, Anna Belle Jones and
Luna Brown; and four brothers, Howard, Sylvester, Blane and Alvin Childers.
Surviving are his wife, Etta Carter Childers; three sons, Johnny, Robert,
and Ray Childers, all of Sylva; five daughters, Ann Ivalee Taylor and
Betty Frady, both of Whittier, Marie Swanger, of Waynesville, Joyce
Smith Sitton of Sylva and Terrie Snyder of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one stepson,
Alvin Carter of Sylva; four stepdaughters, Darlene Burrell, Rosetta
Gates and Irene Gregg, all of Sylva, and Debbie Tucker, of High Point;
20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren and
seven step great-grandchildren.
