Terry Galloway

Terry Milford Galloway, 86, of 410 S. Painter Road, Cullowhee, died Saturday, Jan. 15, at his home following a long illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Wolf Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Don Riddle and Claude Nicholson officiated. Burial was in Wood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joel Galloway, Dicky Conley, Manus Pete, Carroll Parker, Larry Brown and Timothy Ashe. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Wolf Creek Baptist Church.

A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Wade and Eula Newton Galloway. He was a retired lumber grader from Hennessee Lumber Co. He was a member of Wolf Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and taught the adult Sunday school class.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Galloway; and one sister, Faye Hooper. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Zephia Parker Galloway; three sons, Conley Braxton Galloway of Waynesville, Randy Galloway of Brevard and Jack Galloway of Cullowhee; one brother, Junior Galloway of Cullowhee; one sister, Lojuan Cooper of Maggie Valley; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Raymond Hooper

Raymond O. Hooper, 69, of Cullowhee's Speedwell community, died Friday, Jan. 14, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Lloyd Kennedy and Charles Dean officiated. Masonic graveside rites were conducted in Hooper Cemetery by the East LaPorte Masonic Lodge 358, of which he was a member. Pallbearers were Randall and Warren Hooper, Barthell Bryson, Grady Parker, Charlie Bumgarner and Bob Norton.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a Shriner and Mason. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from food service at Western Carolina University. He was a son of the late Clinton and Maude Bumgarner Hooper.

He was preceded in death by one son, Anthony Hooper. Surviving are two sons, Jeff Hooper of Sylva and Brad Hooper of New York, N.Y.; and three brothers, Wayne and Ralph Hooper of Cullowhee and Gordon Hooper of Chilacothe, Ohio.


Elizabeth O'Connor

Elizabeth Ann "Betty" O'Connor, 50, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 11, at her daughter's home in Seminole, Fla., after a long illness.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Greens Creek Cemetery. The Rev. Steve Bailey officiated.

A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., and a 1967 graduate of Northeast High School, she received her associate degree from Tampa College as a paralegal in 1992. She worked 15 years for the Pinellas County School System as a secretary having been at Woodlawn Elementary, Meadowlawn and Riviera Middle schools, Lealman Avenue Elementary, Madeira Beach Middle School and the Area III office. She was a lifelong member of Lealman United Methodist Church, where she was currently serving as the treasurer of the board of trustees. She was also a member of the Suncoast Mustang Club.

Surviving are her husband of 30 years, Thomas O'Connor; two daughters, Shelly Fitzgibbon of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Sharon Clevenger of Seminole, Fla.; her mother, Marion Garver of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Patricia Walden and Linda Cavanaugh, both of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and one granddaughter.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Annie Hooper

Annie Lou Moody Hooper, 100, of Hammock Drive, Sylva, died Wednesday, Jan. 12.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Lloyd Kennedy officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Wayne Hooper, Ralph Hooper, Jim Moss, Tom Edmonds, Michael Holden and Tommy Wheeler.

Born in 1899, she notably had a life span of three centuries. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Warren Francis and Mary Lou Leopard Hooper and wife of the late David Wesley "Joe" Hooper.

She was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters and one son, William Glenn Hooper. Surviving are one son, Warren Hooper of Cullowhee; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.


Jenny Brown

Jenny Gaynell "Nell" Brevard Brown of Bryson City, formerly of Biltmore, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Blumenthal Jewish Home in Clemmons, S.C.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel at Living Water Ministries.

The widow of the late Dr. William Herbert Brown, she would have been 102 in March, notably having a life span in three centuries.

She was the daughter of the late Julia Hephzibah and Zebulon Vance Brevard. She attended Mars Hill and Carson Newman colleges and taught music in Burnsville and Barnardsville before she and Dr. Brown were married in 1926 in Biltmore. Her husband was a Baptist minister and a large part of their ministry was at Living Water Ministries in Bryson City.

Surviving are one son, Brevard Brown of Durham; three daughters, Juanita Pickens of Kingsport, Tenn., Rebecca Walker of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Bernice Swaim of Kernersville; one stepsister, Sara Dickson of Gastonia; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Weston Ensley

Weston O. Ensley, 77, of Sylva's Monteith Branch community, died Monday, Jan. 17, in Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Rich Peoples will officiate. Burial will be in Old Field Cemetery. Nephews will be pallbearers.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Toms Distributors with 47 years of service. A member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church, he was U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was the son of the late Humphrey P. and Beulah Depries't Ensley.

He was preceded in death by six brothers: J.T., Guy, James Lee, Jack, Curtis and Phillip Ensley. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Grace Ledford Ensley; one daughter, Cher Ensley of Asheville; one son, Kirby Ensley of the home; one sister, Carolyn Ensley Fulbright of Canton; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.
