Season's first snow

Snowfall blanketing Sylva's downtown Photo by Teddy Greene The season's first significant snowfall blanketed Sylva's downtown Saturday night, giving photographer Teddy Greene an opportunity to capture this Main Street scene.

Snow began to fall around 10 a.m. Saturday and continued into the night. Jackson County saw accumulations of up to 12 inches in higher elevations, and though the Highway Patrol reported 10 accidents, there were no serious injuries.

County schools were closed Monday and Tuesday (Jan. 24 and 25) due to lingering snow and ice on secondary roads. Additional snow fell Tuesday night, closing schools Wednesday as well.

Town crews used an extra-large shovel and a dump truck to remove the huge piles of snow left behind after Main Street was scraped.
