Winner for poetry

Smoky Mountain High School sophomore Emily Yang earned a Silver Medal at the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program for her poem, “Common Cents.” She first earned a Gold Key in the regional contest. More than 340,000 works of art and writing were submitted for regional consideration with 2,700 national winners in 29 categories. She is the daughter of Yinghong Cheng and Weiguo Yang of Sylva. She has been accepted to the N.C. School of Science and Math in Durham where she will be a student her junior and senior years beginning this fall.
