The Fairview School Science Olympiad team competed in the state tournament on the campus of N.C. State University on April 28.
The competition included the top 52 teams from schools across North Carolina, including many of the top science and engineering schools in the state.
Fairview earned individual medals in six of its 23 events.
Audrey Hinton and Dagney Williams took fourth in the Ping Pong Parachute. Ashleigh Connor and Caleb Phillips were fifth in the Roller Coaster. Mathias Saunooke and Jackson Monteith won sixth in Elastic Glider. Holly McCoy and James Sistare took seventh in the Heredity competition. Dev Hari and Marianna Ashe were 10th in Road Scholar. Mira Williams and Anna Bridgers also placed 10th in Thermodynamics. Trial event medals for second went to Stuck on Science (Vladimir Hotovy, Mary McCarty, Mackenzie Smith and Madison Pearson).
The team placed 11th overall at the competition, narrowly missing their pre-season goal of finishing in the top 10 and earning a team trophy. The team actually tied for 10th , but then lost a tiebreaker to Randolph Middle School by the slimmest of margins. Their 11th place finish still represents the second-highest finish for any team from the western end of the state, only bested by Fairview’s 2016-17 finish.
