Smoky Mountain High School Assistant Principal Jimmy Cleaveland has announced his retirement. He was one of the most successful high school basketball coaches in the history of Western North Carolina, including 10 seasons as Smoky Mountain’s men’s basketball coach.

He resigned as coach in 2016 but stayed on at the school as an assistant principal.

In 10 years leading the Mustangs, he was 243-38 for a winning percentage of .865. The Mustangs had undefeated regular seasons in 2011 and 2014.

Cleaveland graduated from Sylva-Webster in 1985.
