The Democratic Women of Jackson County announced that they are sponsoring an essay contest for school-age children and youth. The topic is “Everyone Eligible Should Vote.”
Judging will be in three categories: elementary, middle grades (6-8) and high school. Winners will receive a $25 gift certificate either to a local book store or a local pizza restaurant as well as a certificate.
“We thought we might spark some interest in the coming election with a contest,” said Barbara Bell, co-president of DWJC. “The contest is nonpartisan and focuses on both the right to vote and the importance of that act in maintaining a democracy.”
Bell said that many of their members are former public school teachers and that a small committee drawn from them would do the judging.
Word limits are 250 words for elementary students, 350 words for middle school students and 500 words for high-schoolers.
Entries should be mailed to DWJC Essay Contest, P.O. Box 867, Sylva, NC 28779 and must be received by Oct. 5.
Entries must have a student’s name, grade level, school attending (or home-schooled), an address and a phone number attached.
