Each year, the Great Smokies Health Foundation presents grants to nonprofits, schools and governmental agencies focused on health, wellness and prevention in Jackson and Swain counties.

The foundation’s Board of Directors approved 31 grants totaling $85,920 to agencies in Jackson and Swain counties. Awards will be presented at the GSHF Thrift Shop, 965 Skyland Drive in Sylva, from 9-10:30 a.m. on Sept. 26.

“Awarding the grants at the Thrift Shops gives the grantees an opportunity to see first-hand where the funds they are receiving are raised, meet some of the dedicated volunteers and share about their programs,” foundation Director Michele Garashi-Ellick said.

The agencies in Jackson County receiving grant awards are nonprofits focusing on the health of children and the elderly and those with special needs, as well as a variety of health and safety organizations.

Refreshments will be served. Interested parties should RSVP by Sept. 20 by calling 507-2270.
