Too much seafood goes to waste in U.S.
American consumers throw out about 1.3 billion pounds of seafood every year, almost half of our country’s supply, and is enough to feed more than 2.7 million people for a whole year.
Considering how much wild fish populations are struggling due to overfishing, pollution, and climate change, it’s very important to reduce this waste.
One way that you as a consumer can help is to buy sustainably caught or farmed seafood. Sustainable fishing methods result in much less bycatch than trawls or gillnets.
You can find sustainably caught fish by looking for the blue Marine Stewardship Council label at the store, or buying from local fish markets that are committed to sustainability.
