A Franklin man was killed at about 5:30 p.m. last Thursday in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 23/74 near Balsam Loop Road.

Daniel Caleb Pait, 31, was traveling at a “high rate of speed” eastbound in a 2007 Honda passenger car when he lost control at about 5:30 p.m., according to a report filed by Trooper Cory Hipp of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

“The car traveled off the left side of the roadway, striking a guardrail and overturning,” Highway Patrol Sgt. Scott Smith said. “The driver was not wearing seat belts and was ejected from the car.”

He died on the scene.

The Balsam-Willets-Ochre Hill Fire Department also responded to the wreck. Traffic was backed up about two hours, Smith said.
