A motorcycle rider was killed Friday when he crashed into a guardrail on U.S. 23/74 near exit 83, Grindstaff Cove Road.

Jayson Michael Pinder, 40, of Altamonte Springs, Florida was riding a Harley-Davidson eastbound with a group of six or eight other motorcycles when he crashed just before the bridge, according to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Tyson Crawford.

“They think it was a medical issue that caused him to veer to the left and hit the guardrail,” Crawford said.

Pinder was traveling with a group of friends and a vehicle pulling a motorcycle trailer, all of whom stopped immediately.

The wreckage of the motorcycle was taken away on the trailer.

Pinder was traveling an estimated 60 mph, Crawford said.

The right lane of U.S. 23/74 was opened about 10 minutes after the crash, and the left lane in about an hour.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Sylva Police Department and Sylva Fire Department also responded.

A call went out for the Mountain Area Medical Airlift immediately after the wreck, but Pinder was dead on the scene and the call was canceled, Crawford said.
