County library wins statewide ‘Best New Facility’ award

Performing last week (Dec. 15) in the Jackson County Library’s Community Room is the Western Carolina Civic Orchestra, conducted by William Henigbaum of Sylva. The group played classical and holiday favorites, including the Brook Green Suite, Corelli Christmas Concerto, Toy Symphony, and Carol of the Bells . The library recently received the Outstanding Facility Award for new libraries in North Carolina in the “large” category – more than 26,000 square feet in size. The award is given annually by the N.C. Public Libraries Directors Association. The facility pairs a new library addition with the historic 1914 Courthouse, which is connected to the library wing by a glass atrium, that serves as the facility’s main entrance. Housed in the Courthouse wing are offices for the Jackson County Arts Council, Jackson County Genealogical Society and Jackson County Historical Association. The old building includes a large conference room, and the Community Room – the former courtroom – that can be used for concerts and other public programs, including movies and plays. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
