Local growers donate to ‘Trees for Troops’

Posted: Tuesday, November 26, 2013 2:00 pm

Christmas tree growers and consumers in Jackson County and throughout Western North Carolina and the United States are donating real Christmas Trees as part of the nationwide Trees for Troops program, sponsored by the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation and FedEx Corp.

Since 2005, Trees for Troops has provided more than 122,000 Christmas Trees to military families in the National Guard, Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. As American farm families and the public donate thousands of Christmas trees each year, FedEx delivers these trees to more than 60 military bases statewide and overseas.

The local drop-off site for Jackson and other Western North Carolina counties will be in the Big Ridge area off N.C. 107.

Grower Henry Fowler will drive the trees to the Linville Nursery, where they will be reloaded and delivered by FedEx to the military bases of Camp Lejeune, Luke Air Force Base and Fort Gordon.
