The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Sylva man on charges of child molestation.
Cartman Cross-Dunn, 20, was arrested for one count of felony statutory sex offense with a child by an adult. The Sheriff’s Office received the complaint from the victim’s mother on Aug. 30, said Major Shannon Queen.
The alleged assault is believed to have taken place in the home according to the initial report, Queen said.
“During the course of the investigation probable cause was garnered to indicate that a crime occurred,” Queen said.
The warrant alleges that Cross-Dunn committed an unnamed sex act with a child under 10 years old sometime between June 3 and Aug 30.
As part of the warrant, Cross-Dunn was required to provide a DNA sample.
The Sheriff’s Office works with medical providers and Adults Working and Advocating for Kids’ Empowerment to investigate claims of sexual abuse. AWAKE advocates for children who are victims of physical and sexual abuse.
“We work closely with AWAKE, and there are practices set up for medical examinations,” Queen said. “There are things called forensic interviews and child medical exams that are used by a forensic interview team as well as medical personnel.”
Dunn’s Facebook profile lists Atlanta as his hometown and states that he has lived in Sylva since June 2.
He was being held in lieu of an $80,000 secured bond and was still in the Jackson County Detention Center as of Tuesday afternoon.
Queen encouraged people not to stay silent if they suspect a crime.
“If you know anybody who is a victim of these abuses, please report them,” he said.
