Jose Manuel Cortes Batalla, 21, of Womble Lane, was arrested by Sgt. Daniel Peoples after a chase on N.C. 107.
In a news release, Peoples states he first saw Batalla’s car speeding 60 mph in a 35 mph zone near the intersection of U.S. 23 Business and N.C. 107.
When Peoples tried to stop the vehicle, Batalla sped away south on N.C. 107, reaching speeds up to 80 mph, Peoples said.
Batalla stopped in the Walmart parking lot.
Batalla allegedly offered Peoples $400 not to arrest him for driving while impaired. Resisting arrest charges were added because Batalla refused to get into the patrol car, according to arrest warrants.
In addition to DWI, Batalla was charged with possession of marijuana up to half-ounce, possessing an open container of alcohol, speeding, failure to maintain lane control and reckless driving to endanger.
His blood alcohol content registered .11, .03 over the state limit of .08.
The offering bribes and flee/elude charges are felonies. Batalla was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.
