Mustangs continued . . .SM's offense compiled 385 yards against the Jets and didn't punt for the second straight week. However, the Mustangs committed four turnovers.Meanwhile, SM yielded 28 points to a team that was averaging just about a touchdown a game coming in. The defense was not responsible for the final score, which came on a fumble return in the final minute. Mustang quarterback Derrick Hawk had another impressive outing as he accounted for 214 yards of offense and four touchdowns. He completed seven of 11 passes for 114 yards and a score and ran 15 times for 100 yards and three TDs. Darius Bryson caught six passes for 99 yards and a score. Trent Dillard had a TD and 72 yards in nine carries. Kyle Bewsey added 64 yards in 11 attempts. The Jets were limited to 54 yards on the ground but had 227 yards through the air. R.D. Moody completed six of 13 passes for 128 yards and a TD in the first half. He was injured just before intermission and did not return. Bronson Gross had seven receptions for 141 yards. Offense was the word from the outset as the teams combined to score on the game's first five possessions. The Mustangs started the fireworks with a 59-yard drive in 11 plays. Hawk had a 13-yard run and completed a 15-yard pass to Caleb Robinson to overcome a penalty. Hawk scored on a six-yard run, and Eric Carpenter kicked the first of his five extra points for a 7-0 lead with 6:25 to go in the first quarter. The Jets answered with a couple of big passes from Moody. He hit Gross for 39 yards then hooked up with Luke Silvers for a 27-yard TD pass on fourth-and-27. Luke Harris kicked the first of his four extra points for a 7-7 tie with 2:51 remaining in the opening period. SM went back to work and marched 76 yards in 13 plays. Highlights included an 11-yard run by Bewsey, Bryson's 11-yard run on a reverse and a 13-yard pass from Hawk to Bryson. Hawk's five-yard run culminated the drive, and the Mustangs led 14-7 with 8:41 to play in the half. Moody completed passes of 14 yards to Phillip Bohanon, 22 yards to Gross and 17 yards to Silvers in Enka's next possession. Gross scored from the four tying it 14-14 at the 4:43 mark. On the first play after the kickoff, Hawk unloaded a 61-yard scoring bomb to a wide open Bryson as SM went back on top 21-14 with 4:27 on the clock. Hawk picked off Moody's pass at the SM 26, but two plays later Bohanon intercepted Hawk's aerial at the Jet four. Enka punted from deep in its territory, and Hawk's 13-yard return set the Mustangs up at the 20. Hawk had an 11-yard run to the four. He scored on the next play, and the Mustangs led 28-14 with 10 seconds left in the half. The Jets' second possession of the second half started at their 15 after Tim Colgrove intercepted Hawk's pass. Reserve quarterback Clint McCoy went to work with an 18-yard run and passes of 19 yards to Bohanon and 14 yards to Gross. A penalty aided the drive that ended with Gross scoring from a yard out cutting the gap to 28-21 with 2:21 to go in the third stanza. Dillard's 12-yard run keyed a 69-yard drive in 10 plays. Dillard scored from the two building the lead to 35-21 with 8:55 left in the contest. Enka was forced to punt but got the ball back when Chad Stamey recovered a Brent Ammons fumble at the Jet 22. Robinson picked off McCoy's pass and brought it back 15 yards to the Enka 49. When Bewsey gained 11 yards on a fake punt for a first down, the Mustangs appeared ready to run out the clock. With Hawk slightly injured, Bryson went in at quarterback and fumbled with Jamie Bohanon returning it 60 yards for a TD bringing his team within 35-28 with 40 seconds left. SM recovered an onside kick to secure the win. |
