Derrick Hawk leads Mustangs past TuscolaSM's Kyle Bewsey gained 71 yards and scored two TDs in 15 attempts. Trent Dillard finished with 56 yards in eight carries. Joey Hawkins netted 31 yards in eight attempts, and Brent Ammons rushed six times for 35 yards.Darius Bryson caught three passes for 46 yards. Tuscola quarterback Shane Simpson carried 11 times for 88 yards and a score. He completed five of seven passes for 69 yards. Ben Earley scored two TDs for the Mountaineers and gained 46 yards in eight carries. Keith Cullins had three receptions for 36 yards. The Mustangs moved into first place in the WAC's 3-A division at 2-2 and are 5-3 overall. They lead Erwin (2-3) by a half game but must go to undefeated Brevard Friday. Tuscola (2-7, 1-3) could still qualify for the playoffs by winning its last two games against Erwin and Franklin. The teams battled to a 7-7 halftime, but the Mustangs scored twice in the third period to take the lead for good. A Tuscola turnover set up the go-ahead score as Sam Burkes fumbled with Caleb Robinson recovering at the Mountaineer 41. On the next play, Bewsey broke through a hole and outraced the defenders to the end zone. Eric Carpenter, who was four of four on extra points, put SM up 14-7 with 10:16 to go in the quarter. Two plays after a punt, Dillard got free on the left side and went 38 yards before being stopped at the Tuscola 28. A 13-yard run by Ammons brought up first-and-goal at the seven. He scored on the next play for a 21-7 margin with 5:42 remaining in the third stanza. The Mounties marched 81 yards in eight plays following the kickoff. Simpson had a 12-yard gain and completed a 21-yard pass to Cullins before keeping on an option play and scampering 30 yards to pay dirt. Ryan Hall, who made all three of his extra point attempts, cut the gap to 21-14 with 2:34 left in the third period. The Mustangs responded with an 80-yard drive in 13 plays. On fourth-and-six from the Tuscola 36, SM went for it and the gamble paid off. Hawk kept around left end and went all the way for a touchdown and a 28-14 advantage with 8:02 remaining in the game. Tuscola fought back and closed within 28-21 on Earley's 21-yard run at the 6:17 mark. The 75-yard drive took just six plays, including Simpson passes of 10 yards to Cullins and 30 yards to Austin Wehking. A penalty on the first play after the kickoff put the Mustangs in the hole at their 11. They got out of it with an 18-yard pass from Hawk to Bryson to the 33 on third-and-16. The Mounties held and took over at their 30 with two minutes left following SM's only punt of the night. Cullins fumbled a pitchout on the next play, and Ammons recovered at the 25. The Mustangs picked up a first down and ran out the clock. The game opened with both teams committing turnovers on their first possessions. SM moved into Tuscola territory after the opening kickoff before Mark Golden picked off Hawk's pass at the 42. The Mustangs got the ball back a few minutes later when Josh Carnes recovered Simpson's fumble at the SM 46. Hawk's 25-yard run highlighted the ensuing eight-play drive. The march culminated with Bewsey scoring from the two giving his team a 7-0 lead with 17 seconds to go in the first period. Tuscola put together an impressive 70-yard drive in 13 plays to draw even. An 11-yard run by Simpson and a 12-yard run by Wehking on a reverse sparked the march. Earley went over from a yard out for a 7-7 tie with 7:12 to go in the half. Hawk had passes of 20 yards to Bryson and 12 yards to Robinson along with an 11-yard run putting the Mustangs in field goal range in the final seconds of the half. Casey Seay's 32-yard kick was no good sending the teams to the dressing rooms tied 7-7. The Mustangs rolled up 403 yards of total offense, including 335 on the ground. Tuscola had 260 yards of total offense. |
