Smoky Mountain swim teams finish first at R-S Invitational

Smoky Mountain men's and women's swim teams opened their seasons Saturday with wins in the R-S Central Invitational at Isothermal Community College.

The men compiled 279 points to 219 for R-S. West Henderson was third at 183 followed by Brevard (154) and Hendersonville (29).

The women edged R-S 261-249. West Henderson was third at 238 followed by Brevard (176) and Hendersonville (116).

Results for the men were as follows with * indicating a regional qualifying time:

  • 200 medley relay ­ Henry Gilman, Travis Debnam, Nick McDonald and Justin Stephens, first, 1:54.81*.
  • 200 freestyle ­ Caleb Corwin, second, 2:15.33; Topher Stephens, fourth, 2:34.9.
  • 200 individual medley ­ Gilman, first, 2:28.32*; McDonald, third, 2:37.45.
  • 50 free ­ Justin Stephens, second, 24.99*; Daniel Smith, sixth, 29.29.
  • 100 butterfly ­ Gilman, first, 1:12.01.
  • 100 free ­ Debnam, first, 53.3*; Justin Stephens, fourth, 1:01.97.
  • 500 free ­ Corwin, second, 6:24.9; Alex Lee, fourth, 7:43.55.
  • 200 free relay ­ Justin Stephens, Corwin, Gilman and Smith , second, 1:48.8*.
  • 100 backstroke ­ McDonald, second, 1:10.98*; Smith, third, 1:13.86.
  • 100 breaststroke, Debnam, first, 1:08.93*; Peter Gilman, seventh, 1:26.49.
  • 400 free relay ­ Debnam, Smith, McDonald and Corwin, first, 4:05.9*.
  • "Captains Travis Debnam and Henry Gilman led the team by ranking first in their individual events," Coach Pat Briggs said. "All three relays qualified for regionals along with five individual swims." He said Corwin and Smith came within one second of qualifying.

    "We have several new men on the team this year," Briggs said. "They all had good swims. With experience and conditioning, they will help make this the best men's team in SMHS history."

    They include Scott Hays, Jonah Jurss, Chris Tennant, Topher Stephens and Jarrod Ketzler. The coach said Lee, Charles Douthit and Peter Gilman all showed good improvement over last year.

  • 200 medley relay ­ Abigail Lewis, Ashley Bowers, Amanda Floerchinger and Cari Heckert, first, 2:06.17*.
  • 200 free ­ Lewis, first, 2:03.64*; Sarah Hipp, fourth, 2:39.07.
  • 200 IM ­ Heckert, second, 2:28.36*; Kelly Wohlman, sixth, 2:53.15.
  • 50 free ­ Katie Loughlin, third, 29.22*; Julie Fox, sixth, 37.23.
  • 100 fly ­ Floerchinger, second, 1:09.56*; Hipp, seventh, 1:41.43.
  • 100 free ­ Loughlin, fourth, 1:04.98*; Lillian Herbers-Kelly, 10th, 1:29.9.
  • 500 free ­ Lewis, first, 5:26.44; Bowers, second, 6:07.71*.
  • 200 free relay ­ Bowers, Wohlman, Fox and Loughlin, fifth, 2:05.76*.
  • 100 back ­ Floerchinger, first, 1:08.59*; Bowers, fourth, 1:14.59*.
  • 100 breast ­ Heckert, first, 1:20.07*; Wohlman, fourth, 1:29.8.
  • 400 free relay ­ Lewis, Floerchinger, Heckert and Loughlin, first, 4:09.57*.
  • "The women did very well for the first meet of the season," Briggs said. "We had 10 individual swims that qualified for regionals and all three relays. Captains Abigail Lewis and Ashley Bowers along with Cari Heckert and Amanda Floerchinger led the team. Freshman Julie Fox and Lillian Herbers-Kelly swam good races for their first meet. Sarah Hipp and Kelly Wohlman, both juniors, had very good swims."
