During a 20-day period this April, more than 12,732 hours were spent picking up litter along Jackson County's highways and waterways.
Herb Nolan of Dillsboro, one of the spearheaders in Gov. Hunt's Clean NC 2000 Initiative, compiled the following figures: The State Department of Corrections had 20 men working 20 days at eight hours a day, for a total of 3,200 hours. Thirty inmates from the Jackson County Jail worked 20 eight-hour days for a total of 4,800 hours. N.C. Department of Transportation had 12 men working 20 days at eight hours a day, for a total of 1,920 hours. Some 400 volunteers participated in the Tuckaseigee River Cleanup during six hours Saturday, April 15, for a total of 2,400 hours. Six employees and volunteers from the town of Sylva worked five hours April 15, for a total of 30 hours. During a two-and-a-half-hour period, 24 people from the Dillsboro Merchants Association logged 72 hours clean-up efforts. During a Forest Hills Cleanup Saturday, 20 people worked three hours, for a total of 60 workforce hours. Sue Bumgarner at the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce estimated their cleanup efforts at 250 hours. |
