Controversary represents 'sad' time for Baptists

To the Editor:

I am a former resident of Jackson County and have followed the events in the area with much interest over the past years. The Sylva Herald is an important conduit for those of us who are attached to the area and truly value the news coming from a much respected newspaper.

I have been terribly saddened lately to see the problems of the Baptist church in that area. Nothing good can come from discord among good and well-meaning Christians concerning the religious beliefs that are expressed by individuals regarding that wonderful body of worshippers in the Baptist churches in the recent rift in Jackson County and the surrounding areas.

Nothing will prevail from the recent quagmire of distrust and innuendoes but more and more of the same! What would our Saviour think of the recent tide of events, especially during this time of the year.

What a sad time for the Christian Faith!

Christmas should be enjoyed without alcohol

To the Editor:

As Christmas and New Year's draw near, I am reminded of the victims killed each year on our highways by drunk drivers. I think about the guests at parties and celebrating family members who get verbally attacked and physically abused by drunken people who don't care how alcohol affects them.

It makes me want to ask our government officials, "Why is alcohol legal?"

It's been proven by countless wives, children and girlfriends who end up in emergency rooms all over the country that alcohol makes people hostile, angry and extremely violent. Scientists have proven that alcohol kills brain cells, creates ulcers and causes liver damage.

My heart goes out to the victims' families who must celebrate Christmas each year without their loved ones because of the inebriated or intoxicated actions of people who are so thoughtless and careless that they'd rather indulge in something that causes them to hurt others' feelings, beat their own family members and kill unsuspecting drivers than to just simply enjoy another type of beverage.

I've heard it said that alcohol enhances a person's true nature; if that's true, we all should rethink serving alcohol at parties and dinners or giving it as gifts. There are alcoholics who will argue that Jesus turned water into wine. But remember, we never drank any of that wine.

I admit I don't drink alcohol and have never had a "buzz" or been "high." I enjoy a much better feeling by keeping the joy of the Lord in my heart and a song of praise to God Almighty on my lips daily. It's my prayer that this year and in years to come that we all can enjoy Christmas (and everyday) with the same feeling of love, happiness and hope that I have had growing up in a loving, Christian home.

Please be careful this holiday season and remember to be a blessing to your fellow human beings because we all are children of a faithful God who loves and cherishes us. Let's celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, by lifting each other's spirits instead of a glass of alcohol.
