Small-town radio business proved satisfyingTo the Editor:Thank you and your editorial staff for the very complimentary editorial in last week's Herald regarding the sale of WRGC.I enjoyed a good relationship with your father (J.A. Gray Sr.), which has continued under your leadership. We have tried, with a small staff, to operate a professionally-sounding station to inform, entertain and serve the people of Jackson County and the surrounding areas. Small-town radio is a satisfying business but not an easy one. We are governed by the Federal Communications Commission. We must operate under the same rules as the big market stations but can afford only a fraction of the staff. We also pay the same price for a transmitter or any other technical equipment as the big operators. It isn't easy, but the small market atmosphere makes up for it. One of the things making it easier to compete in small towns is getting along with the competition. In all my stations, I have told my people, "We have a product to sell; sell it and don't knock the competitor." On behalf of the WRGC staff, thanks very much. Sincerely, Jim Childress |
