Have we attained 'Silent Spring?'

To the Editor:

When my family built our little cottage on Dicks Creek in 1963, there were many birds and animals (reptiles) since this was a very scarcely populated area. Now I am especially concerned about the birds.

Whatever happened to the buntings? We used to see them, especially on the power lines in the area. They were so beautiful, reminding us of canaries. They were yellow, blue, green and such beautiful little birds.

But now they have all gone. Where have they gone? We also never hear any birds singing anymore. It seems to me we have attained what Rachel Carson wrote in her book "The Silent Spring." It is indeed sad, sad, sad. Future generations will not know what we have lost and that is the saddest of all.

Sincerely yours,

Joyce Walker
