Thank you, Sheriff, for a job well done

To the Editor:

A week or so ago, my wife and I approached Sheriff Jim Cruzan regarding a problem in our neighborhood.

We found Sheriff Cruzan to be most cordial and polite. Early in our conversation we saw his desire to defuse a potentially volatile situation. Even though this may be his job, we felt he was giving this matter his personal attention. We can ask for nothing more.

I am using this media to thank Sheriff Cruzan and also to thank the people who elected this outstanding man as our sheriff.

Respectfully,

Michael Jenkins

Construction is necessary

To the Editor:

The "blight" mentioned by Mr. Tice two weeks ago has nothing to do with the destruction of the woodlands, but what will replace the trees.

If trailers were not going to be put on that land, and something that would benefit him was put there, then he would probably not have a problem with the hillside construction.

I agree that nature should be preserved; however, construction is necessary to keep building our economy.

Abandoned dogs dampen vacation

To the Editor:

As we leave to return to Florida, I want to thank all North Carolina citizens for their gracious hospitality. We have enjoyed our vacation here.

The only sad comment is to the person or persons who abandoned two dogs on Rockdale Road. They appeared Tuesday (July 31) at the cabin door. The young male beagle with a collar was so hungry that after eating the pet food I gave him, he could not keep it down. The young brown pup with one white leg and paw has all his bones showing.

I called officials with the Jackson County Animal Control, who assured me he will come out to try to catch them. Also, I have notified the Realtors about them.

But who is feeding them until they are caught?

Please, think twice before dropping off animals to starve.

Smith makes housing affordable

To the Editor:

We can appreciate the concerns of a recent letter writer (Bob Tice of Greens Creek) for the natural environment and the unnecessary destruction of trees and land. However, we believe Tice is wrong to single out one developer for destroying land in the same manner a parasite would.

When we decided to settle in Jackson County nearly two years ago, we searched for an existing home to purchase. We found none we could afford to live in that were fit to live in. We looked at homes with rotted floors or roofs, damaged septic systems, no heat or A/C systems, and some that were almost inaccessible on the side of a mountain.

Homeowners and Realtors are obviously taking full advantage of a housing "boom" made possible by people moving in from other places who are willing and able to pay exorbitant prices. This is one very good reason young people leave this area: They simply cannot afford to own a home here.

We can safely say if it were not for Wayne Smith we could not have purchased a home in Jackson County. We also bought from Mr. Smith because in developing his properties, he takes great care not to destroy the landscape and environment in the process. He leaves as many trees as possible, and he and his crew went out of their way to grade carefully, place rocks at our request and to otherwise prepare our property considering the best aesthetic value possible.

We assure our neighbors in the Greens Creek area that continued development of our property will serve to enhance the natural beauty around us. We are hopeful (because this is our home) that present and future PeeWee Place residents will be like-minded in this regard. We chose this particular location because we love and respect the natural beauty it offers.

In respect to county officials, let us just say Mr. Smith doubtlessly is required to jump through the same bureaucratic hoops that we were in establishing our homesite.

We suggest Mr. Tice and others who are justifiably concerned with the future development of the land we share take a closer and more objective look at Mr. Smith's developing areas before rendering such harsh and negative thoughts or criticism publicly.
