Thanks for support of bluegrass jamboreeTo the Editor:Last Saturday's Balsam Mountains Bluegrass and Gospel Jamboree held at the Community Service Center was a huge success. The bands were terrific and really enjoyed playing in this area. The audience really got into the show with their clogging, applause and standing ovations - everyone had a great time. Many people worked very hard to put on this first-class bluegrass festival. I'd like to offer thanks to everyone who helped in any way, especially to Balsam Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and Savannah Volunteer Fire Department. I appreciate the support of the many local businesses who served as sponsors, and I'd like to thank all of our outstanding volunteers. Many tourists were here or the weekend, staying in our motels and campgrounds and eating at our fine restaurants. A number of them commented on the hospitality and friendliness of the people of Jackson County, which makes us all proud of the area where we live. If you didn't get to attend last weekend's bluegrass show, we will have another one Aug. 18 in honor of Jackson County's sesquicentennial. We'll feature old-timey dress and hog-squealing and rooster-crowing contests in addition to fine bluegrass music. Proceeds from both events are going to needy families in this area. Again, thanks to everyone, and I hope to see all next month for another first-class bluegrass jamboree here in Sylva. Terry E. Crisp Sylva |
