A day on the farmTo the Editor:Those of us at Pomme de Terre Organic Farm appreciate all who participated in and supported our Second annual Raspberry-Fest held at the farm in Jackson County during the Fourth of July weekend. The local media did an excellent job of getting the word out to their readers, as evidenced by the overwhelming response from raspberry-pickers from as far away as Brevard and Georgia. Expectations were exceeded as more than 100 people came out on opening day alone, filling the fields with colorful hats and baskets of ripe red and blackberries. The laughter, stained fingers and purple tongues were evidence that Americans still find a day on the farm to be a pleasant and rewarding experience. The encouragement and kind words spoken by everyone went a long way toward making our year of hard work preparing for the event worthwhile. Farming has few economic rewards these days, but the giggling smiles of children and the stories we heard from the elderly of their berry-picking youths added to the pleasure of seeing our neighbors and mountain visitors harvesting fresh, healthy, organically-grown produce. When the berries began to run out, people gladly accepted with smiles and "thank yous" new potatoes and fresh garlic to supplement their harvests. It made me remember that agriculture helped make America great, and my fellow Americans do the same for small local farms. John Beckman Farm Manager Pomme de Terre - Organic Farm Sylva |
