AWAKE annual campaign successful so far

To the Editor:

The AWAKE Children's Advocacy Center, Harris Regional Hospital, the Family Outreach Services Program of the Jackson County Department of Public Health, and Department of Social Services wish to thank all of those in the community who helped make April Child Abuse Prevention Month such a success this year!

More than 9,000 blue ribbons went out into the community, and many child advocates wore them to denote their support of child abuse prevention. AWAKE's annual fund campaign letter, which went out to some 2,500 people in early April, included blue ribbons and an educational bookmark. The campaign has brought in $2,200 so far, bringing AWAKE two-thirds of the way to the center's goal of $3,500.

Thousands of educational flyers and brochures were made available at displays and tables set up around the community. Thanks to Wal-Mart, the health department, the Department of Social Services, hospital, and the Family Resource Center for providing locations for these efforts.

A special thank you to WRGC-AM Radio for giving the "team" a radio spot to discuss efforts. More than 300 kindergarten children benefitted from personal safety puppet shows presented by AWAKE volunteers, the Smart Start nurse/community educator and a Family Outreach Services staff member, who donated 80 hours of service to accomplish this effort. School personnel provided follow-up discussion to further develop and reinforce child abuse prevention learning and parents were involved through take-home sheets sent home with children.

The Family Outreach Services Project will put up a special billboard near Wal-Mart this month to focus attention on the need to develop a "team approach" in the community to truly make a difference in child abuse prevention.
