Proud of 210th members

To the Editor:

For the past few days my crew and I at Ingles have fed the members of the 210th National Guard, which has been called to active duty.

I would like to say how proud I'm of each and everyone of them. While I only know a few of them, I have know some of them since Desert Storm.

I would like to let our town know that we have some fine men and women serving our country. I pray that if our men and women do get shipped out, that they all return safely home to their families and friends. Please keep them all in your prayers, as well as their families.

God bless you, 210th. We thank you for what you stand for and we are very proud of each and everyone of you.

Zoning administrator's methods questioned

To the Editor:

It's easy to see that good old-boy's rules are strongly enforced by Sylva's zoning officer.

Last year I was cited for having junk on my property, which is not in compliance with the town's ordinance. In order to obtain photos of my property, the zoning officer drove through numerous other properties (including my neighbor's), which were much more junk-covered and visible than mine. The other property owners were not cited for non-compliance.

I believe the reason for this discriminating action on the part of the town is based on a complaint I filed with the N.C. Department of Transportation regarding a street problem. Apparently this complaint ruffled enough feathers to result in the zoning officer's question to me: "Why should the town comply with North Carolina laws when you aren't complying with the town's zoning ordinance?"

I can only hope the town board members do not condone the zoning officer's enforcement methods. But I fear the good old-boy network controls more than the public will ever realize.
