As part of Gov. Hunt's Clean NC 2000 Initiative, inmates spent Tuesday afternoon are picking up litter along roadsides in Jackson County. As part of a wider effort, two volunteer cleanups are slated for this Saturday. Trash will be removed from the Tuckaseigee River and its banks during the 16th annual river cleanup. Participants should gather at Western Carolina University's Hinds University Center at 11 a.m. Volunteers will either float a section of the river from East LaPorte to Barkers Creek or walk along the bank to pick up trash. For more details, call Last Minute Productions at 227-7206. Saturday's other spring cleaning effort will be directed at Sylva's roadways. Volunteers willing to pick up trash in preparation for the April 22 Greening Up the Mountains festival are asked to meet at Mark Watson Park at 9 a.m.
