The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers. Deadline for obituary news is 5 p.m. on Monday.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased’s children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased are items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Mary Fowler

Mary Bess Fowler, 81, of Sylva, died Thursday, June 25, 2009.

Private services are planned.

A native of Jackson County, she was the third daughter of the late J.B. and Mable Bumgarner Galloway. She grew up in Glenville and after graduating from Glenville High School, she lived in Baltimore, Md., and Washington D.C., before returning in 1948, when she married her husband.

She then moved to Cullowhee, where she was manager of the Book Exchange at Western Carolina University. She retired from WCU after 23 years of service and enjoyed gardening and quilting.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Fowler, who died in 1962.

Surviving are two daughters, Hilda F. Leonard of Rock Hill, S.C., and Janelle Krull of Boone; one son, William W. “Bill” Fowler of Sylva; two sisters, Catherine Sheel of Denver, Colo., and Jackie Stillwell of Sylva; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Activities Department at Mountain Trace Nursing Center, 417 Mountain Trace Rd., Sylva, NC 28779; or the Kidney Foundation of North Carolina, 5950 Fairview Rd., Ste. 550, Charlotte, NC 28210.

Melton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Jimmie Cope

The Rev. Jimmie Lee Cope, 63, of Greenridge Lane, Kannapolis, died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Carolinas Medical Center, Northeast, Concord.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, in the chapel of Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord, with the Revs. Ronald Cooper and Allen Montgomery officiating.

Burial was in Cabarrus Memorial Gardens, Concord.

A native of Jackson County, he was born Nov. 24, 1945, to the late Erastus Cope and Beulah Stephens Cope. He was employed by KolorTex as a supervisor and was a member of Independence Square Freewill Baptist Church, Kannapolis, and was a member of the Pilgrim Association of Freewill Baptist Churches.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers; and three sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Fonda Rae Schreck Cope; three sons, Rod Culver of Monroe, Bill Culver of Winston-Salem, and Brandon Revis of Concord; two daughters, Katrina Wilkins of Concord, and Sheila Culver of New York; three brothers, brother, Darrell Cope and Gale William Cope, both of Sylva, and Pete Cope of Great Falls, Mont.; one sister, Kathleen Furr of Concord; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Independence Square Freewill Baptist Church, 1615 Independence Square, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

Homer Noland

Homer R. Noland, 71, of Waynesville, died Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at a later date.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Ben and Susie Ferguson Noland. He was self-employed and the former owner of Junaluska Texaco and Homer’s Zone 3 Night Club. He worked at Junaluska Driving Range until his illness.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Clement; and five brothers, Charles, Howard, Jack, Jerry Lynn and Van Noland.

Surviving are three sons, Randy Noland of Clyde, Brian Noland of Canton and Matthew Mollo of North Augusta, S.C.; five sisters, Bennie Mae Lance, Judy Noland, Laurie Cagle and Mary Helen Clement, all of Waynesville, and Linda Rathbone of Clyde; four brothers, Walter Noland of Clarksville, Ga., Jeff Noland of Clyde, John Noland of Milton, Ind., and Ben Noland Jr. of Asheville; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Dr., Clyde, NC 28721.

Michael Wilnoty

Michael Dennie Wilnoty, 23, of Cherokee, died Saturday, June 27, 2009.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Acquoni Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Ed Kilgore, Roland Whitaker and Denny Crowe officiating.

Burial was in Yellowhill Cemetery. Pallbearers were uncles.

He enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves baseball and New Orleans Saints football.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bernard and Harriet James.

Surviving are his parents, Michael and Savannah Taylor Wilnoty of Cherokee; one brother, Dawson Wilnoty of the home; one sister, Taylor Wilnoty of the home; grandparents, Jonathan and Cleo Taylor of Bryson City; grandfather Calvin James Sr.; and grandmother Mary Lambert of Cherokee.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Roger Shuler

Roger Verlin Shuler, 64, of Waynesville, died Saturday, June 27, 2009, at his residence.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, at Balsam Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Johnny Swanger officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Jimmy, Brent, Steve and Mikey Shuler, Rick Greenarch and Bill Kent.

A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Haywood County for the past 16 years. He was a volunteer at Waynesville Pharmacy since 1993.

A son of the late Lewis and Elsie Conner Shuler, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Marie Maynor; and one brother, Enloe Shuler.

Surviving are five brothers, Earl, Winston, Carroll and Doyle Shuler, all of Balsam, and Kenneth Shuler of Mt. Holly; and two sisters, Frankie Carter of Waynesvile, and Autherine Gibson of Balsam.

Ollie Queen

Ollie Brown Queen, 90, of Windsor Point, Fuquay-Varina, formerly of Webster, died Monday, June 29, 2009, after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 3, at Sylva First Baptist Church. Other services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Windsor Point.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today (Thursday) at Melton Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Locust Field Cemetery.

Born in Watauga County to the late Nila Council and Connie Stanberry Brown, she lived most of her life in Jackson County before moving to Fuquay-Varina five years ago.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Anne Dills, Claudene Potts and Barbara Gregg; and two brothers, Boyd Brown and Burton Brown.

Surviving are her husband of 71 years, Edwin W. Queen; three sons, William of Titusville, Fla., Larry of Holly Springs, and Richard of Raleigh; one daughter, Nancy Mason of Garner; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sylva First Baptist Church nursery or to the charity of one’s choice.
