Garren Jones nails in support beams to hold up the porch on Main Street's last Victorian-era home, the Hooper House. Now undergoing extensive renovation, the house has been gutted and will become the Chamber of Commerce headquarters. The fund-raising drive to support the remodeling project is going well, said chamber director Julie Spiro. In the first of a three-phase restoration, $150,000 has been collected to stabilize the structure built in 1905. Architect Odell Thompson of Cullowhee estimated that $400,000 will be needed to completely restore the house, once the home and office of Dr. Delos Dexter Hooper. The fund-raising effort continues, Spiro said, and those who give at least $1,000 will have their name placed on a bronze plaque, along with an engraved brick in the Main Street sidewalk in front of the house.
