Herald's history series: 20th Century Club to beautify Mill Street |
Plans are once again under way to beautify Sylva's Mill Street, pictured here in the 1970s. The project this time is under the direction of Sylva Partners in Renewal. |
The following was printed in The Sylva Herald and Ruralite on April 19, 1979:
The Sylva Twentieth Club is making plans to beautify Mill Street. The project will be the club's entry in the Community Improvement Program, which is sponsored by the General Federation of Women's Clubs and Sears, Roebuck and Company. State awards in the competition total $800; and national, $25,000. The club has met with representatives of the Sylva Merchants Association to discuss the project. It is working with some basic plans developed by the Tennessee Valley Authority. |

"Mill Street Improvement seems especially urgent now, since the completion of the paving and burying of utility wires in the summer of 1978. Several new businesses are also opening in the Mill Street buildings," said a club spokesperson.
CIP chairman of the Twentieth Century Club is Edith Alley, who is also a member of the state CIP Committee of the N.C. Federation of Club Women. Committee members for the Mill Street project are Polly Fuller, Mary Kneedler, Micki Ahlin, Dottie Thornburg, Mary Alma Tweed, Dorothy Parris, Martha Vodak and Ruth Morgan, club president. |
