First look at newborn

Reader Jan Woodard Boyer of Sylva brought an interesting piece of historical trivia to the Herald office recently. Shown is a newspaper photo of her brother, Lee Roy Woodard, known as “Poker,” as an infant, pictured with his mother, Murriel. The photo is believed to have come from a newspaper somewhere in the Boone area. The practice of taking photos of newborns was established during World War II to allow fathers receiving their hometown papers overseas to see their children for the first time. Also shown is Jan’s father, Roy David Woodard.
