Malcolm MacNeill, chairman and founder of Great Smoky Mountains Railway, has announced that negotiations are under way for the sale of the Dillsboro-based business.

According to a written release from railroad President Joan MacNeill, talks are being held with American Heritage Railways, owner of Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Herb Nolan, a member of the Jackson County Economic Development Commission and town administrator in Dillsboro, said Durango executives were in town Friday reviewing railroad properties and assets. His hope, Nolan said, is that if the sale goes through that Durango officials will continue to headquarter the Smoky Mountain Railway in Dillsboro.
