Great grapes

Ralph Conner Herald photo by Rose Hooper "Last year I pruned these vines down to about 2 inches and my wife, Dot, thought we wouldn't have much of a crop this year, but I want you to look," Ralph Conner of Skyland Drive said of his concord stock. "We've got grapes growing all over the place." His nine rows will easily produce 60 gallons, he predicted. "By the time they are ripe, you think most of the work is done, but then you have to start making jelly and juice," said Dot. "There's just so many grapes you can eat and so much jelly and juice you can make." The Conners share the rest with others, give to those in need, and sell the remainder on the honor system at the little stand at the end of their driveway. The price is hand-printed on a cardboard sign, either by the gallon or bushel, and a set of scales rests on the tabletop among the baskets of grapes.
