In two separate ceremonies Aug. 3, Gov. Jim Hunt recognized outstanding local volunteers. Haley Ellen Hampton (left), daughter of Richard and Deborah Hampton, was named the recipient of the James B. Hunt Jr. Awards for Youth in Public Service. The rising Smoky Mountain High senior has been a community volunteer since the seventh grade. A junior volunteer at Harris Regional Hospital, she works with the Jackson County Library's Summer Reading Program and the Family Resource Center's Literacy Program.

Through Bill Fouts and SMHS's FFA club, Hampton has also volunteered with roadside cleanup, cutting firewood for the elderly and collecting items for the flood victims of Hurricane Floyd. Hampton also volunteers at the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
She said her parents and Fouts have been good role models to follow in "giving back to the community."

In the back-to-back second ceremony, also held at SCC, Hunt presented the Governor's Volunteer Awards to outstanding volunteers in the western region. (Local recipients are listed below.) "We recognize, thank and celebrate those who give from their heart to help others," Hunt said. "The greatest thing about our state is the people... people carrying out the commandment that God gave us to "Love Thy Neighbor.'"
