Fire broke out last Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 12) at Appalachian Fly Shop on River Road in Dillsboro. Owner Alan Belcher heard a basement smoke alarm as he was closing up at about 5 p.m. Though Belcher's phone lines burned through while he was dialing 911, workers at nearby Riverwood Shops alerted firefighters after they saw smoke coming from the building, said Capt. Dale Nations of the Sylva Fire Department. Sylva firefighters, assisted by members of Cullowhee, Balsam, Savannah and Qualla fire departments, were able to contain the fire to the basement. The fire apparently started when materials near an oil-fired hot water heater ignited, Nations said.
