Filing period ends Monday

By Carey Phillips

The filing period to run for office in North Carolina will close at noon Monday, Feb. 7.

As of Wednesday morning, only two candidates have filed for the two available seats on the Jackson County Board of Education. They are incumbent Mary Jane Dillard in District 1 and retired educator Kenny Nicholson in District 3.

District 1 includes Qualla, Barkers Creek, Webster and South Sylva precincts. District 3 is comprised of Webster, Greens Creek and Savannah precincts. Voting is countywide, but candidates must reside in the districts they represent.

The two school board seats are the only local races on the ballot this year. The nonpartisan election will be held May 2 at the time of the primary election for statewide races.

Democrats Phil Haire and Dan Robinson have filed for re-election to the State House and State Senate, respectively. No other Jackson County candidates have filed for the Legislature although some from other counties have tossed their hats in the ring.
