Jack Farmer of Sylva, center, has received the Long Leaf Pine Award, North Carolina's highest honor, for volunteer service to his community. Sen. Dan Robinson, right, nominated Farmer for the award and presented it Aug. 20. Assisting with the award presentation was the Rev. Ed Beddingfield, pastor of First Baptist Church, Sylva. A past president of the local Habitat for Humanity chapter, Farmer has been active in church charitable causes and organized a team from Sylva First Baptist to assist in rebuilding a church sanctuary in Kinston that was destroyed by Hurricane Floyd. |
